About Us
Singh Sabha Brisbane (Taigum) is a vibrant Sikh Gurdwara dedicated to serving the spiritual, religious, educational and cultural needs of the Sikh community across Brisbane.
We are seeking a committed and knowledgeable Religious Assistant (Granthi) who is passionate about Sikh values, community service and preserving Sikh traditions.
This is a full-time position requiring flexibility to work weekends, public holidays and outside normal working hours to meet the religious and pastoral needs of the congregation.
About the Role
The Religious Assistant will play an integral role in the daily religious activities of the Gurdwara and provide spiritual guidance and pastoral care to members of the Sikh community.
The successful applicant will uphold Sikh Maryada (Code of Conduct) and support the management committee in delivering religious, educational and community services.
Key Responsibilities
Birth ceremonies and name-giving ceremonies
Engagement prayers
Anand Karaj (Sikh wedding ceremonies)
Ardass and other religious blessings
Assist with the daily religious services and activities at the Gurdwara.
Participate as an Akhand Pathi during Akhand Paths.
Provide spiritual guidance, counselling and pastoral support to members of the Sangat.
Perform prayers during the preparation of Karah Prashad.
Perform prayers during the preparation and serving of Langar, including weekend services and major Sikh religious occasions such as Vaisakhi, Gurpurabs, Bandi Chhor Divas and Shahidi Diwas.
Welcome and assist members of the congregation at the Gurdwara and Langar Hall.
Visit members in hospitals and private homes to provide spiritual care and support.
Conduct Ardass at the Gurdwara and members' residences as required.
Perform funeral prayers and crematorium services.
Teach Gurbani Santhya, Sikh history and principles of Sikhism.
Teach sacred hymns (Kirtan) and Tabla to interested members of the community.
Coordinate educational and cultural programs promoting Punjabi language, Sikh heritage and Sikh values, particularly among children and youth.
Promote healthy living by educating the community on the harmful effects of tobacco, illicit drugs and alcohol in accordance with Sikh teachings.
Change Rumala Sahib daily and Chandoa/Chanani Sahib every fortnight in accordance with Gurdwara traditions.
Report any concerns or activities that may adversely affect the Gurdwara or wider community.
Comply with the Constitution, policies and Code of Conduct of Singh Sabha Brisbane.
Undertake additional duties as reasonably directed by the Management Committee.
Skills & Experience
Thorough knowledge of Sikh philosophy, Gurbani and Sikh Maryada.
Experience conducting Sikh religious ceremonies and daily Gurdwara services.
Ability to perform Nitnem, Gurbani Kirtan and participate in Akhand Path.
Ability to read and interpret Guru Granth Sahib Ji accurately.
Minimum 5 years of experience providing pastoral care and spiritual counselling.
Robust communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to teach Punjabi, Gurbani Santhya, Sikh history, Harmonium and Tabla.
A respectful, compassionate and community-focused approach.
Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, public holidays and attend emergency religious services, including funerals.
