About the Role
Working across the Intensive Care Unit, the Centre for Virtual Health Research, and the Decision Support Unit, this role develops and supports the extraction and structuring of clinical data from the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) for downstream analysis and research.
A core deliverable is the end‐to‐end pipeline that moves clinical data from the EMR — through a local data warehouse and cloud storage — into Northern Health's structured clinical data repository for analytics and research.
In the ICU stream (0.5 EFT), you will extract structured and unstructured data from the EMR to support routine submission to the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS)



Adult Patient Database and other ICU research and analytics activities.
In the VVHR stream (0.5 EFT), focused on VVED research, you will build the data pipeline that extracts unstructured data, then use large language model (LLM) APIs to extract and structure codified clinical information from unstructured consultation notes, ready for downstream AI modelling.
To be successful in this role you will have:
Experience and Good Working Knowledge Of:
SQL and relational databases — writing queries, joins, and transformations, and maintaining an existing schema.
This is the primary day‐to‐day skill for the role.
Data pipeline and ETL development, including ODBC‐based extraction from source systems and the EMR, and Python (e.g. pandas) for data processing and automation.
Large language model (LLM) APIs to extract codified, structured data from unstructured clinical notes, including prompt design and output validation; and healthcare data systems and registries such as the EMR and ANZICS datasets.
Proven Ability to:
Deliver accurate, timely, and validated data extracts, reports, and dashboards.
Translate complex data into actionable insights that inform decision‐making.
Manage multiple priorities effectively while maintaining data integrity and quality.
Demonstrated:
Commitment to continuous improvement, automation, and innovation in analytics.
Strong collaboration with clinicians, managers, and analysts across departments.
Understanding of NSQHS standards and data governance requirements.
