Background

Boost Design is a Sydney-based multi-award winning product development consultancy that develops physical products from idea through to production. With an ever-expanding pipeline of new and varied projects, we are growing and are currently seeking a Product Development Lead to join our talented team.

Combining product design experience with research, strategic thinking, project management and commercial oversight, the role will help clients translate early or ambiguous hardware product ideas into explicit product requirements and practical development pathways.

Working across industrial design, electronics, firmware, software and other specialist disciplines, the candidate will coordinate project teams and ensure that recommendations are technically informed, commercially realistic, clearly communicated and professionally presented.

While this role requires deep product development experience, it is not a hands-on design role. The emphasis is on researching and defining product development direction, leading client relationships, presenting research and stage outcomes, and ensuring projects remain aligned with the client’s objectives, scope, schedule and budget.

Key responsibilities

Product research and definition

Lead early-stage product definition engagements from initial briefing through to stage completion.

Undertake appropriate market, competitor, user, technology, manufacturing and regulatory research, including stakeholder interviews and workshops.

Translate research findings and multidisciplinary technical input into clear product requirements, risks, priorities and recommended development pathways.

Leverage our internal team and external experts to ensure research outcomes are fit for purpose and maximise opportunities for our clients.

Create and present well-structured presentations, briefs and plans that make complex information accessible and understandable to non-technical clients.

Client and project leadership

Act as the primary client contact, leading meetings, workshops and project communications while building trusted client relationships.

Prepare and manage design scopes, proposals, estimates, and variations, for both new and subsequent development stages.

Coordinate multidisciplinary design teams and maintain alignment between the client’s objectives, commercial constraints and technical delivery.

Experience and capabilities

The successful candidate will have:

- A degree in industrial design, mechatronics engineering, or a related discipline, supported by significant physical product development experience.
- Demonstrated experience leading client relationships, defining product opportunities and managing project scope, budgets, schedules and commercial risks.
- Strong product research and strategic-thinking capabilities, with the ability to bring structure and direction to uncertain or evolving ideas.
- A sound understanding of multidisciplinary product development, manufacturing and commercialisation.
- Excellent written, verbal and visual communication skills, including the preparation and presentation of high-quality client presentations and documentation.
- The ability to coordinate and guide designers, engineers and other specialists while contributing to design direction when required.
- Strong commercial awareness, organisation and attention to detail, combined with a team-oriented and constructive approach.
- The confidence and judgement to navigate challenging client, project and commercial situations.

Reporting and working arrangements

The role will report to the Operations Manager and work closely with the design, project management and engineering teams.

The position is full-time and onsite, with occasional travel required for client meetings, workshops or project activities. This role is based in our Sydney head office and is not suitable for remote workers.
