Job Type: Permanent position | Full time position
Job Description
Sunup Farm at Spring Creek, Queensland, is a certified organic horticultural grower that cultivates and supplies fresh produce to markets across the region. The business runs the full growing cycle in house, from crop production and irrigation through to harvesting, packing and dispatch, and holds organic certification across a broad range of vegetable and fruit lines. With a firm commitment to product quality, workplace safety, sustainable growing practices and employment within the regional community, Sunup Farm is looking for an experienced Quality Assurance Manager to join the team.
As Sunup Farm continues to grow and to uphold the standards behind its certifications, we are bringing quality assurance and food safety under dedicated leadership. Reporting to management, the Quality Assurance Manager will take ownership of the systems, standards and everyday checks that keep our produce safe, consistent and compliant, from the paddock through to the packing shed and on to our customers. In this role you will:
- Build and maintain the farm's quality assurance and food safety management systems, so every line of produce consistently meets the standards our customers and certifiers expect.
- Identify the food safety standards, organic certification requirements and regulatory codes that apply to our operation, and turn them into clear, practical operating procedures the team can follow each day.
- Set quality objectives and workable plans that keep customers satisfied while making efficient use of the farm's people, water, inputs and equipment.
- Plan and run internal audits, and coordinate external and certification audits,
so the business stays inspection ready throughout the year.
- Use quality checks, data and monitoring tools to track produce quality from the field through grading, packing and dispatch, and step in quickly when results drift outside acceptable limits.
- Investigate non-conformances, quality issues and customer complaints, identify the root cause, and put corrective and preventive actions in place so problems do not recur.
- Keep quality documentation, records and reporting systems accurate and current, including full batch traceability from paddock to customer.
- Oversee hygiene, sanitation and protected food-handling practices across the packing shed, cool rooms and produce-handling areas, and keep cleaning and pest-control programmes on track.
- Carry out pre-harvest and post-harvest inspections and product grading, confirming that fruit and vegetables meet quality specifications before they are packed and shipped.
- Monitor storage and cool-chain conditions so freshness and shelf life are protected from harvest right through to delivery.
- Maintain records of approved inputs and treatment activity in line with organic certification, and verify that incoming materials and supplier products meet our requirements.
- Review how we grow, harvest, pack and dispatch, looking for practical improvements to systems,
processes and workflows that lift consistency and reduce waste.
- Train and support farm and packing staff on quality procedures, food safety and compliance, building good practice into everyday work.
- Act as the main point of contact on quality matters for management, auditors, regulators and customers, keeping each informed on performance and compliance.
- Champion continuous-improvement initiatives across production and operations, encouraging a culture where quality is everyone's responsibility.
About you:
- At least 2 years of relevant experience in quality assurance, food safety or quality management, ideally gained in horticulture, fresh produce, food manufacturing or a related industry.
- A bachelor's degree or higher qualification in food science, agricultural science, quality management or a related discipline.
Personal attributes:
- Strong attention to detail with a methodical, organised approach to records, checks and reporting.
- A confident communicator who can train staff and work comfortably with auditors, regulators and customers.
- Sound problem-solving skills and a calm considered manner when quality issues arise.
- Hands-on and approachable, at ease moving between the office, the packing shed and the field.
- High standards of integrity and accountability, with a genuine commitment to food safety and quality.
Salary and employment conditions:
- Permanent, full-time position of 38 hours per week.
- $75,000 to $80,000 plus superannuation per annum.
If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you! Please be sure to combine a covering letter addressing the key criteria set out above as the first page of your resume.
