About the Role

The Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW) plays a vital role in delivering culturally appropriate health care and support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families, and communities. Working in partnership with clinical and community teams, the AHW provides direct client care, health education, advocacy, and cultural liaison to support improved health outcomes and access to services.

This is an Identified Position, meaning it is open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants under Section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide culturally appropriate primary health care and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients
- Assist with the assessment, treatment, and follow-up care of patients under the supervision of clinical staff (e.g. nurses, GPs)
- Deliver health education and promotion activities in areas such as chronic disease, sexual health, nutrition,



alcohol and drug use, mental health, and maternal/child health
- Act as a cultural liaison and advocate, supporting clients to understand and access health services
- Build trust and relationships with community members to encourage participation in health programs and regular health checks
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records and documentation
- Participate in case conferencing, multidisciplinary care planning, and referrals
- Support community engagement events, outreach clinics, and health campaigns
- Contribute to the development and review of culturally protected health materials and resources
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders including Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), government agencies, and non-profits

What You’ll Bring

- Mustidentify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
- Understanding of health issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including the impact of social determinants of health and intergenerational trauma
- Experience working with Aboriginal communities in a health, community, or support role




- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- Willingness to undertake (or completion of) training as an Aboriginal Health Worker or Certificate III/IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment
- Basic computer skills and ability to maintain written records
- A valid Blue Card / Working with Children Check or willingness to obtain (mandatory)
- A current National Police Check or willingness to obtain (mandatory)
- Current Open Driver’s Licence (mandatory)

Desirable Qualifications

- Completion of an accredited Aboriginal Health Worker qualification (e.g., Cert III/IV or Diploma).
- Previous work experience in a primary health care or community-controlled health setting.
- Knowledge of local language(s), cultural protocols, and community dynamics.
