We operate from a number of fabrication and engineering workshops, including a shipyard facility in Margate, where we design, build and maintain a large range of commercial vessels, as well as providing general engineering and fabrication services.
About the role
As the shipyard Naval Architect and member of a small inhouse design team, supporting both new build and maintenance and refit works, the role is quite varied.
Reporting to the Design Manager, you will provide engineering and technical solutions to develop compliant commercial vessel designs from concept stage through to delivery, working closely with clients, project managers, survey authorities and production teams. You will assist the Marine Maintenance team with engineered solutions to ensure safe docking and slipping of vessels. You will work with clients to problem solve challenging issues concerning vessel modifications and on water infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide Naval Architecture design and support services in delivery of projects,
in accordance with project specifications
- Perform general structural calculations, including FEA
- Contribute to the development of technical reports and documentation
- Ensure design detail compliance with statutory regulations
- Develop vessel slipping and support plans
- Support implementation of engineering policies and procedures to improve project efficiency & safety
- Participate in meetings with stakeholders and provide engineering insights as required
- Assist with preparing bid/tenders for recent work
- Contribute to developing shipyard policies and procedures relating to quality and safety
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Bachelor of Engineering – Naval Architecture
- Minimum 2 years experience in a Naval Architecture role is preferred
- Experience with engineering and design software such as Maxsurf, Strand 7, Rhino 3d, AutoCAD
- Practical, adaptable, solution-focused mindset in a production environment
