Product Development Engineer - Mechanical & Mechatronics

Engineer the mechanisms that make furniture move - at one of Australia's most design-led brands.

The King Difference

This is not just an engineering role where you execute a brief and hand it over.

This is a hands-on mechatronics and mechanical engineering role at the heart of King Living's Design and Manufacturing function - where your engineering solutions become the mechanisms inside furniture that reaches customers across the globe. You will work primarily on motion products - recliners, adjustable beds and complex mechanisms - bridging the gap between design vision and production reality, and bringing the kind of resourceful, self-directed problem-solving that turns a concept sketch into a factory-ready component.

This is a role for someone who is equally comfortable at a workbench and in a design meeting. You will prototype, fabricate, test and refine - working closely with industrial designers and R&D; teams locally and globally, travelling to manufacturing facilities in China and Thailand roughly once or twice a year, and taking genuine ownership of the engineering challenges in front of you without waiting to be told where to start.

If you are a mechatronics or mechanical engineer who thrives in a fast-moving, hands-on environment, brings a proactive solutions mindset, and takes genuine pride in the craft behind great furniture - this is the role for you.

What You Will Own

Mechanism Design & Mechatronics Development

Design and engineer creative motion mechanisms and components - recliners, beds and articulating systems - balancing aesthetics, functionality and manufacturability from concept through to production.

Prototyping, Fabrication & Testing

Get hands-on with the in-house prototyping team - fabricating, testing and refining mechanisms using metal fabrication skills including welding and cutting, and ensuring every solution meets King Living's performance, safety and durability standards.

Manufacturing Feasibility & Supplier Liaison

Refine designs for manufacturing feasibility in close collaboration with industrial designers and global R&D; - and liaise with suppliers to source components and materials that meet design, quality and cost requirements.

Quality & Documentation

Champion quality throughout the design and production process - maintaining assembly guides, BOMs and technical specifications, and driving continuous improvement based on testing and real-world feedback.

Research & Innovation

Stay ahead of new materials, component options and motion technology - recommending improvements that enhance durability, aesthetics and sustainability, and challenging competitor patents through smart design.

Who You Are

You will likely come from a mechatronics, mechanical engineering or product development background - ideally with experience in motion-based products such as medical devices, rehabilitation technology, hospital beds, prosthetics, aged care equipment or articulating mechanisms. Engineers from biomedical, medtech or similarly precision-focused environments are strongly encouraged to apply.

What matters most is your hands-on capability, your proactive mindset, and your ability to work resourcefully without needing every detail spelled out before you start.

You are a self-directed, solutions-focused engineer who takes genuine ownership of problems - and brings the fabrication skills and mechatronics knowledge to solve them.

- Mechatronics background is essential - mechanical-only profiles are unlikely to suit the motion product focus of this role
- Hands-on metal fabrication experience highly desirable - welding, cutting and working with parts directly
- Experience developing detailed 3D models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software
- Strong understanding of material performance and motion system design
- 2+ years' experience in a relevant engineering role - 5-10 years preferred, but mindset and capability matter more than tenure
- Comfortable working in a fast-moving, startup-style environment - self-managing, resourceful and proactive
- Willing and able to travel to manufacturing facilities in China and Thailand approximately once or twice a year
- Strong communicator who builds productive relationships across design, manufacturing, supply chain and quality teams
- Sound problem-solving instincts - you find answers independently before escalating
