Backend & Operations Engineer, Python/Django/Wagtail

Location: Hobart, Tasmania; hybrid
Employment: Full-time, permanent

We’re looking for a backend engineer to join the small Neon Jungle team in Hobart.

You’ll take ownership of the backend systems, including developing applications in Python, Django, and Wagtail, managing the infrastructure they run on, and helping decide the future direction of our development stack.

This is a good opportunity for one who wants real input into how things are done. You’ll work closely with the rest of the team across technology, design and strategy, with the flexibility and support to improve how we build, deploy and support our work.

We do interesting and ambitious digital work for organisations that are doing important things. Our projects bring together good design, thoughtful technology and useful outcomes.

What you’ll do

Build, maintain, and support website backends using Python, Django, and Wagtail.

Manage the servers, databases and cloud infrastructure that support our work.

Deploy applications and keep production systems secure, reliable and performing well.

Help set the direction of our backend architecture and development practices.

Solve technical problems with the support of the wider team.

Work directly with clients when technical input is needed.

As part of looking after our production systems, there may occasionally be some on-call responsibility – this has been very minimal in reality,

only a few times a year.

About you

We’d like to hear from you if this chance excites you, and you think you can hit the ground running.

Experience with Wagtail would be ideal, but it isn’t essential if you have good Django or other Python web services experience and are interested in learning it.

You don’t need to know every tool we use. We’re looking for someone with good technical foundations, sound judgement and an interest in helping us improve how we work.

How we work

Neon Jungle is a small team. Your ideas will be heard and your work will make a difference.

You’ll take ownership of our backend practice, while working with experienced colleagues who can provide context, support and perspective when it’s needed. We value independence, but we don’t expect anyone to work without backup.

This is a Hobart-based hybrid role. We generally work from our studio three days a week, with up to two days working from home. We’re flexible and understand that people have lives and responsibilities outside work. If you’re looking for different hours or conditions than what we’ve outlined, let us know. We’ll move mountains for the right candidate.

We care about doing excellent work, keeping up with where the industry is going and finding better ways to solve problems. We try to avoid unnecessary process and complexity.
