The APS 6 Suicide Prevention Information Officer contributes to the development and implementation of suicide prevention knowledge, initiatives and programs across Defence.

They will require an in-depth knowledge of suicide prevention in a workplace context, including case conceptualisation and research.

- Contribute to the understanding of suicide and suicide prevention through the ADF Suicide Review Process and the Defence Suicide Database
- Develop enterprise suicide prevention reform recommendations, briefs, and communication products
- Contribute to the evaluation of suicide prevention initiatives
- Contribute to policy development, frameworks, and activities for suicide prevention reform including those in response to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide
- Engagement with internal and external stakeholders to coordinate suicide prevention objectives, including Defence Groups and Services, Inspector-General Australian Defence Force representatives, healthcare providers, government and non-government agencies, Department of Veterans’ Affairs, research institutions and universities.

About our Team

The Mental Health and Wellbeing (MH&W;) Branch is the lead for Workforce Mental Health policy and programs and enables the assured and continuous improvement of Mental Health & Wellbeing across the Defence enterprise. The Branch, comprised of military members and civilian employees, forms an inter-disciplinary team focused on improving the mental health and wellbeing of the Defence community.



A primary function of the Branch is the facilitation and implementation of the Defence and Veterans’ Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2025-2030.

The Strategic Advisory Group (SAG) within the MHW Branch, is a high-performing team of public health and allied health subject matter experts. The Psychosocial Wellbeing and Suicide Prevention (PWaSP) directorate within SAG provides evidence-based initiatives, insights, and policy guidance to advance Defence’s psychosocial and suicide prevention systems.

Our Ideal Candidate

We are seeking a highly motivated health professional with a background in suicide prevention and an understanding of case conceptualisation and applied research methodologies, to build and drive suicide prevention initiatives across the Department.

Our ideal candidate will demonstrate the following capabilities:

- Able to translate suicide prevention research into practice.
- Compile, analyse and interpret suicide prevention data to inform recommendations and future initiatives.
- Engage internal and external stakeholders to progress mental health and wellbeing objectives.
- Work effectively in an integrated workplace to build and maintain robust, collaborative relationships.
- Able to prepare briefings, proposals, and reports informed by evidence-base best practice and research.
