We are seeking an experienced Electronics Engineering Team Lead to join a growing technology business delivering innovative electronic product development solutions.
The Electronics Engineering Team Lead leads the company Electronic & Electrical (EE) Solutions engineering and design team and owns the technical delivery of customer projects, from concept through to production. This is primarily a hands-on role whilst leading the team through their own technical contribution rather than directing from a distance.
This is a rare opportunity for a technically accomplished engineer who enjoys remaining hands-on while leading a small engineering team. Rather than managing from the sidelines, you will lead by example—personally designing electronic hardware, developing schematics and PCB layouts, and providing technical leadership throughout the complete product development lifecycle.
Working closely with customers and cross-functional teams, you will take ownership of engineering delivery from initial concept through to production, ensuring high-quality, commercially successful outcomes. The role is ideally suited to someone who combines strong technical capability with a collaborative leadership style and a passion for mentoring engineers while continuing to solve complex engineering challenges.
If you thrive in an environment where you can balance technical excellence, customer engagement and team leadership, this role offers the chance to make a genuine impact on the development of innovative electronic products
A key purpose of the role is to become the senior technical authority the engineering team relies on for design decisions and review - the point of escalation for technical judgement that currently sits with the Managing Director. Over time, the role is intended to take on full leadership of the engineering function, freeing the Managing Director to step back from technical delivery and focus on growing the business.
This responsibility is built up progressively as the Team Lead establishes trust and demonstrates sound judgement.
Key responsibilities and elements of the role include:
Design electronic hardware and associated systems that meet customer requirements, relevant standards and commercial objectives.
Own technical design decisions across the project lifecycle, balancing performance, manufacturability, cost and product life.
Take projects from concept through prototyping and validation to production release.
Lead and coordinate the engineering team's day-to-day work, allocating projects and balancing workloads and priorities.
Oversee project progress against schedules, identifying and resolving bottlenecks and resource constraints.
Provide technical guidance, conduct design reviews and mentor engineers to build the team’s capability.
Run regular team meetings and keep project requirements and expectations clearly communicated.
Technical Processes, Quality and Documentation
Maintain and improve engineering processes, templates and documentation standards.
Oversee technical review and approval so deliverables meet quality standards before release to customers or production.
Provide expert technical advice that aligns customer needs with practical engineering solutions.
Support the Managing Director in scoping projects, estimating effort and preparing proposals.
Lead technical discussions directly with customers through the design phase, keeping them informed and confident and bringing the Managing Director back in at key stages such as prototype handover
Key success and outcomes in the role include:
Engineering projects are consistently delivered on time,
to specification and to quality standards.
Customers receive responsive, professional technical support and remain confident through the design phase.
Engineering processes, documentation and quality controls are robust and continually improving.
The engineering team is well-coordinated, capable and supported.
Key Skills & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in electronics or a related engineering discipline.
Electronics design experience, with the seniority to lead a team.
High proficiency in Altium Designer.
Competent with basic mechanical design for electronics: enclosures, panel layouts, mounting and test jigs. Includes producing parts suitable for fabrication or 3D printing.
Demonstrated experience designing to Australian Standards (AS/NZS) and managing EMC compliance: design, diagnosis and testing.
Team coordination and project management capability.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Familiarity with physical user interface design: switches, displays, indicators and membrane keypads.
Working knowledge of embedded firmware: enough to collaborate effectively with firmware engineers and make sound hardware/firmware trade-offs.
Proficiency with Autodesk Fusion.
Experience in a contract design or manufacturing (design house) environment.
Experience taking products through to volume production.
Experience mentoring or leading engineers.
A background in an SMEor similarly broad, hands-on environment.
Personal Attributes
Takes personal ownership and accountability for decisions and commitments.
A strong problem-solver who enjoys tackling difficult technical challenges.
Communicates clearly and can explain technical concepts simply.
Builds rapport and trust with customers and colleagues easily.
Detail-focused, with a strong eye for accuracy and quality.
Continuously looks for better ways of doing things, and values sound processes.
