Mechanical / Industrial & Process Infrastructure
Travel
Project and site travel as required; generally infrequent
Develop into a trusted consulting engineer capable of solving complex industrial problems and delivering complete projects.
The Opportunity
Prizm Engineering is seeking an ambitious and capable Mechanical Engineer with a strong foundation in engineering who wants to become an exceptional industrial consulting engineer.
You will work directly with experienced engineers on complex projects across heavy industry, minerals processing, manufacturing, energy, water and wastewater infrastructure. Assignments may involve completely new systems, major plant upgrades, brownfield modifications, equipment investigations or the resolution of difficult operational and reliability problems.
The role extends beyond completing individual calculations or drawings. You will progressively contribute across the full project lifecycle - from site investigation, Basis of Design and engineering analysis through detailed design, specifications, tender documentation, construction support and commissioning.
We are looking for someone who approaches uncertainty with curiosity and discipline: investigate, think critically, ask for input, verify and follow through.
What You Will Work On
- Design and assessment of industrial ventilation and dust collection systems, HVAC systems, pumping systems, pipework, pressure systems and industrial process mechanical equipment.
- Mechanical calculations and modelling, including airflow, pressure loss, hydraulic performance, equipment duties, system resistance and mechanical design checks.
- Brownfield site investigations, plant inspections, condition assessments, field measurements, drawing verification and development of practical modification strategies.
- Development of mechanical design concepts, engineering sketches, layouts, equipment arrangements and design details, followed by direct engagement with drafters to produce accurate and constructible engineering drawings.
- Preparation of Basis of Design documents, technical reports, specifications, scopes of work, cost estimates, tender packages and commissioning documentation.
- Equipment selection, technical bid evaluations, supplier engagement, design reviews, construction support and commissioning activities.
- Failure investigations, reliability assessments and development of practical improvements to existing machinery and industrial systems.
- Project planning, cost and schedule awareness, client communication and collaboration with electrical, civil, structural and control-system disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver accurate and technically defensible engineering work under appropriate supervision, in accordance with project requirements, company systems and relevant Australian standards.
- Develop calculations, models, drawings and technical documents that clearly communicate the design intent and can be independently checked.
- Identify assumptions, interfaces, missing information, safety issues and technical risks early rather than allowing them to become project problems.
- Plan and manage assigned tasks, communicate progress and constraints, and meet agreed quality, budget and programme requirements.
- Participate in site inspections, client meetings, design reviews, Safety in Design workshops and construction or commissioning support as required.
- Work constructively with engineers, drafters, contractors, suppliers, operators and clients, and respond professionally to review comments and feedback.
- Continuously improve technical templates, calculations, workflows and knowledge resources where a better way of working is identified.
- Maintain clear records,
revision control and traceability of engineering decisions.
How We Develop Engineers
Our aim is to develop engineers with technical depth, practical judgement and the capability to deliver complete consulting projects. You will receive direct mentoring from senior engineers and learn by working through real industrial problems.
- First-principles engineering: understanding why a system works, not simply repeating a previous solution.
- Practical application: considering installation, operation, maintenance, access, outages, constructability and actual site conditions.
- Engineering judgement: separating facts from assumptions, evaluating evidence and knowing when further verification is required.
- Quality and accountability: producing work that is clear, checked, traceable and professionally defensible.
- Commercial awareness: understanding scope, fees, schedule, risk, client expectations and the value of timely communication.
- Progressive responsibility: taking ownership of larger and more complex work packages and learning to coordinate multidisciplinary delivery as capability is demonstrated.
AI-Assisted Engineering and Better Ways of Working
Prizm actively develops AI-assisted tools to improve research, document development, workflow automation and knowledge capture. You will be encouraged to become highly proficient with these tools and to identify opportunities to eliminate low-value, repetitive work.
AI is treated as an engineering assistant, not a substitute for engineering judgement. Outputs must be independently checked, confidential information must be protected, assumptions must be visible, and the responsible engineer remains accountable for the final work.
As part of a growing consultancy, you will see how technical delivery, client relationships and the business of engineering fit together. Strong ideas are welcomed regardless of job title. You may help develop a new calculation tool, improve a design process, prepare a proposal, automate a repetitive workflow or contribute to a new service offering.
The environment suits people who enjoy responsibility, variety and high-impact technical work. We work hard, hold high standards and also value a healthy and sustainable work-life balance.
About You
We are looking for capability, practical judgement and mindset, not a candidate who already knows every system or standard. Strong candidates will demonstrate:
- A genuine interest in becoming a highly capable mechanical consulting engineer and a willingness to invest in ongoing technical development.
- Curiosity and resourcefulness: the discipline to investigate unfamiliar problems, establish what is actually occurring and learn what is required to complete the work properly.
- Strong attention to detail, while retaining an understanding of the complete system, project purpose and client outcome.
- Sound time management, personal organisation and the ability to prioritise competing tasks.
- A high standard of written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain technical matters clearly to clients, operators, tradespeople and other disciplines.
- Coachability, professional humility and the confidence to ask questions before uncertainty becomes rework.
- Ownership of commitments and a commitment to quality, safety, integrity and continuous improvement.
- Practical mechanical aptitude and comfort working in operating industrial facilities where equipment may be hot, dusty, noisy, difficult to access or poorly documented.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent qualification recognised for professional engineering practice in Australia.
- Approximately three to eight years of relevant mechanical engineering experience. Candidates outside this range may be considered where demonstrated capability aligns with the role.
- Eligibility for membership of Engineers Australia and a commitment to work towards Chartered and RPEQ registration where not already registered.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel capability, including the ability to develop clear and auditable engineering calculations, together with strong general computer capability and confidence in learning new digital tools.
- Current Australian driver licence, Construction White Card, ability to obtain client-specific site inductions and willingness to attend project sites as required.
- Australian working rights.
- Physical ability and willingness to attend client sites and safely undertake site inspections as required.
- Exposure to heavy industry, minerals processing, manufacturing, energy, water, wastewater or related industrial infrastructure.
- Practical experience with machinery, fabrication, maintenance, construction or other hands‑on technical pursuits that demonstrate mechanical aptitude.
- Experience with AutoCAD and the development or review of mechanical layouts and coordinated design drawings.
- Experience with FluidFlow or comparable hydraulic, piping or ventilation modelling software and FEA software. Exposure to SpaceGass for mechanical‑structural interface assessment is also advantageous.
- Experience preparing Basis of Design documents, engineering reports, construction specifications, scopes of work, tender packages, cost estimates or commissioning documentation.
What Prizm Offers
- Direct mentoring and technical review from experienced mechanical engineers.
- Meaningful project work involving operating plants, complete mechanical systems and real client decisions.
- Exposure to the full project lifecycle, from site investigation and concept development through detailed design, tendering, construction and commissioning.
- A modern, AI-enabled working environment that encourages automation, experimentation and continual improvement.
- Support for relevant professional development and progression towards Chartered and RPEQ registration.
- Visibility of the full consulting process, including technical delivery, project management, client relationships, proposals and business development.
- Career progression towards Senior Mechanical Engineer based on demonstrated capability, judgement, reliability and contribution.
- A cooperative team in which high standards are expected, strong performance is recognised, and a healthy work-life balance is valued.
Who Should Apply
This role is intended for a mechanical engineer who is motivated by capability, responsibility and the opportunity to become exceptionally good at the profession. You may be analytically strong, practically minded, highly self‑directed or simply determined to develop faster than your current environment allows.
You should care about the quality of your work, be willing to inspect equipment up close, respond positively to rigorous review, and learn whatever the project requires. This role is intended to develop into a trusted senior consulting engineer capable of leading multidisciplinary projects, supporting younger engineers and becoming a recognised technical specialist within Prizm.
