Southern Gulf NRM is a not-for-profit community-based company responsible for the planning and implementation of sustainable Natural Resource Management (NRM) in the Southern Gulf of Carpentaria region of Northwest Queensland. Southern Gulf NRM is governed by a Board of Directors under the provisions of the Corporations Act 2001 and the Constitution of Southern Gulf NRM Ltd.
The Southern Gulf region covers 215,000 square kilometres and comprises the catchments of the Flinders-Cloncurry, Leichhardt, Gregory-Nicholson Rivers, Settlement Creek and Morning Inlet, and the Wellesley Islands. Programs are delivered collaboratively with a range of stakeholders including landholders, all levels of government, industry groups, Traditional Owners, and conservation groups.

Purpose of Position
The Project Officer (NRM) supports activities in the Biodiversity, Pest and Weeds and Sustainable Agriculture program. Tasks are diverse and negotiated between the General Manager and Team Leaders, requiring a multidisciplinary and structured approach. This role is both field and office based, and offers the opportunity to work closely with the CEO one day a week in the delivery of regional project tasks and regional stakeholder engagement.
- Implement natural resource management projects by building and maintaining productive partnerships with relevant stakeholders in the development and delivery of projects
- Partner with current research activities relating to the development of best practice standards in management and monitoring
- Deliver NRM projects including invasive species density assessments, mapping, data collation and information management, project planning, works supervision, budget management, stakeholder engagement, and reporting
Selection Criteria
- Tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent experience in Agricultural or Environmental Science or related disciplines
- Sound scientific/technical knowledge of NRM, particularly invasive species management
- Experience in industry extension and capacity building for the agricultural and land management sectors
- Strong organisational, written and verbal communication skills
- Proven initiative and ability to work autonomously and as an effective team member
- Project documentation, identifying funding opportunities, and collaborations
- Experience with GIS mapping and online MERI systems desirable
- Relevant experience in regional, rural, and remote communities, including long-distance travel
Additional Factors
- This role requires periods of working unsupervised, travel throughout the region (including on unsealed roads), and a current manual driver’s license
- Full-time (38 hours/week), five weeks’ annual leave with loading, study leave, vehicle for work use, rent and relocation assistance, and superannuation at 12%
- Location: Mount Isa or within the Southern Gulf NRM region
