Project engineering leadership and execution oversight for the Mt Lyell restart
Mt Lyell is an iconic asset that has helped shape Australian mining for over 120 years. Today, it’s poised at the start of its next chapter, which consists of large-scale brownfields restart project, delivering an operation that will support the growing global demand for copper as a critical energy transition metal, with significant gold and silver by-products.
Sibanye-Stillwater Australia has completed the studies necessary to support the restart of operations, consisting of underground mining, the construction of a new processing facility, a paste backfill system, shaft infrastructure refurbishment, and all the other required non-process infrastructure at Mt Lyell.
Expression of Interest
The Project is still subject to final Board approvals, so we are seeking Expressions of Interest for a Senior Project Engineer to support safe, timely and cost-effective delivery of the Mt Lyell Growth Project.
Location of Role
The role is intended to be based on site in Queenstown, Tasmania, and a residential arrangement is strongly preferred. Alternative arrangements may be considered for an exceptional candidate, provided they can maintain regular site presence and close engagement with the project team.
About the Opportunity
Subject to Board approval, this role will support the Project Director in the safe, timely and cost-effective delivery of the Mt Lyell Cu-Au Growth Project while providing independent oversight of project progress, performance and execution readiness.
The role will coordinate project engineering activities across design, procurement, construction and commissioning interfaces, act as the Project Director’s delegate as required, and lead earned value management, quantity verification, progress assessment, forecasting and project controls assurance.

Role Purpose
To support the Project Director in the safe,
timely and cost-effective delivery of the Mt Lyell Cu-Au Growth Project while providing independent oversight of project progress, performance and execution readiness.
Key Accountabilities
Support the Project Director in delivering the Mt Lyell Growth Project from detailed design through procurement, construction, commissioning and operational handover.
Act as delegated representative for the Project Director as required, including attendance at management meetings, contractor reviews, governance forums and stakeholder engagements.
Lead project engineering coordination across processing plant, paste backfill, water infrastructure, surface facilities and associated capital works.
Monitor project performance against approved scope, schedule and budget and provide early identification of emerging risks and opportunities.
Develop, implement and maintain earned value management systems and reporting across all work packages.
Verify physical progress completed by contractors and consultants through field inspections, quantity verification and earned value assessments.
Review contractor claims, progress reports and payment milestones to ensure alignment between completed work and claimed progress.
Provide independent assessment of forecast cost, estimate-at-completion and schedule performance metrics.
Manage change control processes and support evaluation of scope changes, trends and potential claims.
Prepare monthly project performance reports, executive dashboards and decision-support information for the Project Director and Steering Committee.
Lead delivery of assigned minor capital projects and infrastructure packages, including planning, procurement, contractor management, construction oversight and handover.
Coordinate interfaces between engineering disciplines, operational readiness activities, commissioning teams and site operations.
Maintain alignment with SSW Group Minimum Standards and the Project Management Framework.
Support contractor management processes, including tender evaluations, scope reviews, contract administration and performance management.
Provide technical support to value engineering, constructability reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
About You
We are seeking an experienced Senior Project Engineer who can bring strong technical judgement, commercial discipline and practical execution focus to a complex brownfield restart project.
You should bring:
Strong technical and commercial judgement across mining, resources, infrastructure or heavy industrial projects.
Excellent analytical and quantitative assessment capability, including earned value, forecasting and progress verification.
Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams and managing contractor performance.
Confidence supporting project governance, executive reporting and decision-making for senior project stakeholders.
Ability to influence outcomes without direct authority and work effectively across operational, project and contractor interfaces.
High levels of integrity, accountability, attention to detail and resilience in complex project environments.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline
Post-graduate qualifications and qualified certifications such as PMP, PSP or equivalent advantageous
Minimum 10+ years’ experience in mining, resources, infrastructure or heavy industrial projects
Experience with Owner’s Team project execution
Demonstrated experience delivering capital projects in brownfields construction and operating environments
Experience in project engineering, project controls, cost management, contract administration and contractor management
Proven experience assessing construction progress, earned value, forecasting and project performance
Experience managing contractors and coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams
Experience supporting commissioning and operational handover activities
Experience in cost, schedule and physical progress verification
Experience with mineral processing, paste backfill, water infrastructure and associated mining infrastructure highly regarded
