Assistant Directors, Queensland Operations

You will join a high performing team of leaders across the country that facilitates the readiness of the agency and the proper conduct of electoral events.
Assistant Directors, Operations, lead small teams across the state delivering face-to-face services, electoral event planning and delivery.
Reporting to the Director Operations, you will be an active participant in the broader Queensland leadership team, modelling exceptional behaviours and contributing to our culture, business planning and deliverables.
The Opportunities
We are seeking an agile, motivated, and outcomes-focused leader to manage state election planning, delivery, and evaluation activities.
You will be responsible for strategically focusing on agency objectives to facilitate the adoption of best practice across the broader leadership network. You will also manage your team in operational planning, election delivery, and the provision of public services to support both business-as-usual and election planning activities.
You will contribute to the development of team objectives for both short-term tasks and longer-term strategic initiatives for the state. This includes setting priorities, maintaining team cohesion, and ensuring high-quality outputs. Using excellent communication skills, you will be required to manage multiple stakeholder relationships effectively and deliver quality results within tight deadlines. Your work will require you to take initiative, have strong attention to detail and utilise analytical skills to contribute to business improvement strategies.
Before and during electoral events, you will assist with the mobilisation of over 100,000 temporary election workforce staff, using your leadership skills to support your team in managing this significant surge workforce.
There is currently an ongoing and non-ongoing opportunity available. These positions are based in the Brisbane office.
Roles available will be dependent on the changing business needs and requirements of the AEC. Future opportunities may be filled on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis.
To excel you’ll have:
- Demonstrated experience leading and developing teams, including setting clear expectations, allocating work, providing coaching and feedback, and fostering a positive, high-performing team culture.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently while contributing collaboratively to team outcomes and supporting organisational priorities and strategic objectives.
- Experience managing competing priorities and delivering results in demanding environments, with the ability to remain composed under pressure, learn new concepts quickly, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
- Demonstrated sound judgement and analytical capability, including identifying risks, evaluating information, and implementing practical solutions that consider broader organisational impacts and dependencies.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities, operational requirements, and stakeholder needs, adjusting approaches, communication styles, and work practices to achieve effective outcomes.
- Experience building productive relationships and influencing outcomes through effective communication, collaboration, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement across a range of audiences and levels.
- Self-awareness and commitment to ongoing career development, with the ability to reflect on performance, pursue improvement opportunities, and contribute to nationally consistent service delivery outcomes.
