Communication Systems Engineer

Design and support the technology that keeps people connected, informed and cared for

Use your communications infrastructure expertise in a role where reliable networks, telephony and care communication systems directly support staff, residents and the delivery of safe, responsive care.

As the Communication Systems Engineer at UPA, you will play a key role in designing, implementing and supporting the critical communication technologies that enable our people to provide high-quality services across residential aged care, retirement living, home care and community programs throughout NSW.

This is an opportunity for an experienced communications or network professional to take ownership of enterprise communication platforms, work on meaningful technology projects and contribute to systems that have a direct impact on the daily experiences of residents, families and staff.

The opportunity

Reporting to the Technology Operations and Security Manager, the Communication Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, deployment, administration, monitoring and ongoing support of UPA’s communication infrastructure.

This includes enterprise wired and wireless networking, telephony platforms, nurse call systems and carer communication technologies that are essential to supporting effective operations and resident care.

You will provide technical leadership across critical communication services, ensuring solutions remain reliable, secure, scalable and aligned with business requirements.

Working collaboratively with internal stakeholders, clinical teams, operational leaders, technology specialists, vendors and service providers, you will ensure communication platforms continue to perform effectively across a diverse network of UPA locations.

This role will suit a technically skilled professional who enjoys solving complex infrastructure challenges, improving systems, managing projects and working in an environment where technology has a meaningful purpose.

What you will be responsible for

Enterprise networking

You will design, implement, configure and support enterprise wired and wireless network infrastructure across UPA locations.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Managing switching, routing, wireless access points, network cabling and associated network services.
- Supporting LAN, WAN and WLAN environments to ensure high availability and performance.




- Troubleshooting complex network incidents and service disruptions.
- Monitoring network health, capacity, performance and security.
- Supporting network upgrades, improvements and technology refresh programs.
- Ensuring network solutions meet operational requirements and industry best practice.

You will contribute to the ongoing development of scalable network standards and ensure UPA’s communication infrastructure remains resilient and fit for purpose.

Telephony and unified communications

You will manage and support UPA’s telephony environment, ensuring employees across multiple locations have reliable communication services.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Designing, configuring and administering telephony platforms.
- Managing call routing, auto attendants, hunt groups, voicemail, handsets and softphone solutions.
- Supporting telephony migrations, upgrades and improvements.
- Coordinating carrier services including SIP trunks, mobile services, internet circuits and related telecommunications requirements.
- Working with vendors and service providers to resolve issues and optimise service delivery.

Your expertise will help ensure our teams can communicate effectively and respond quickly to operational and resident needs.

Nurse call and care communication systems

A key component of this role is supporting technology that directly contributes to resident safety and care responsiveness.

You will:

- Provide technical support for nurse call systems and related platforms.
- Act as the primary technical liaison with nurse call vendors and service providers.
- Support configuration, maintenance and troubleshooting activities.
- Assist with system improvements and technology projects.
- Ensure critical care communication systems remain reliable and available.

Your work will directly support the teams who provide care to residents every day.

Carer communication technologies

You will support and administer carer communication devices and related care technologies used across UPA sites.

This will involve:

- Configuring and maintaining communication devices.
- Supporting implementation of current care communication solutions.
- Working with operational teams to understand technology requirements.
- Providing technical advice and guidance to ensure systems support effective workflows.

Technical leadership and project delivery

You will take ownership of communication infrastructure projects from design through to implementation.

This includes:

- Leading technical design activities.
- Developing solution standards and technical recommendations.
- Supporting project planning, implementation and transition activities.
- Coordinating installations, upgrades and system changes.
- Working with internal teams and external partners to deliver successful outcomes.

You will bring a structured approach to technology delivery and help ensure projects are completed efficiently and effectively.

Documentation, governance and continuous improvement





Maintaining strong documentation and governance practices will be an important part of this role.

You will:

- Maintain accurate network diagrams, configuration records and technical documentation.
- Manage system backups and configuration information.
- Maintain asset records and operational procedures.
- Support security, compliance and technology governance requirements.
- Identify opportunities for improvement and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

What you will bring

To be successful in this role, you will have:

- A bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Telecommunications, Networking or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
- Minimum five years’ experience in a Communications Engineer, Network Engineer, Unified Communications Engineer or similar technical role.
- Demonstrated experience designing, implementing and supporting enterprise wired and wireless networks.
- Strong knowledge of LAN, WAN, WLAN, routing, switching, VPNs and network security principles.
- Experience administering enterprise telephony platforms and coordinating telecommunications services.
- Experience supporting critical communication systems such as nurse call, healthcare communication platforms or similar environments.
- Strong troubleshooting capability and the ability to resolve complex technical issues.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to produce clear technical documentation and maintain accurate records.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver projects effectively.

Highly regarded experience

The following experience will be highly valued:

- Juniper certifications or equivalent networking qualifications.
- Experience working within aged care, healthcare or another critical service environment.
- Knowledge of structured cabling standards and telecommunications environments.
- Experience with cloud-managed networking platforms.
- Experience using monitoring and alerting platforms.
- Understanding of communications cybersecurity principles.
- Experience managing technology vendors and service providers.
