The Managing Editor is the strategic editorial lead across an entire portfolio of brands. They are responsible for defining and executing a unified content vision that drives growth, audience engagement, and commercial outcomes across multiple products and platforms. Managing editors may also be the functional editor of one, or some, of the brands in their portfolio.

As Managing Editor, you will oversee all editors and journalists in your suite, ensuring content quality, consistency, and timeliness while supporting and mentoring your team.

You will work closely with stakeholders across the business—particularly the commercial, marketing, digital, and events teams—to align editorial efforts with overarching company goals.

You will foster a collaborative and high-performance editorial culture that embraces innovation, prioritises productivity, and champions excellence in journalism.

- Develop, maintain and strengthen strategic relationships with senior stakeholders across Government, Defence, the Australian Public Service, allied partner nations and industry to enhance editorial access, facilitate collaboration, and secure participation in commercially aligned events, awards programs, multimedia products and thought leadership initiatives.
- Lead the editorial strategy across your brand portfolio, setting a clear direction and growth plan in alignment with company objectives
- Ensure all content is timely, original, high-quality, and tailored to the needs of each audience and platform
- Oversee all editors and senior journalists in their execution of daily publishing and brand-specific strategies
- Ensure editorial products are commercially aligned and support business development, revenue, and event initiatives




- Drive the effective use of AI, SEO, analytics, and other technologies to improve content performance and team efficiency
- Ensure the successful delivery of multimedia and broadcast products across the portfolio
- Maintain brand consistency and quality across all channels, including web, email, social media, podcasts, video, and events
- Champion productivity improvements through better systems, workflows, and cross-functional collaboration
- Recruit, manage, and mentor editorial staff, ensuring professional development and effective resource planning
- Oversee compliance, performance management, and staff engagement across the editorial team
- Collaborate closely with commercial, events, and marketing teams to develop and deliver integrated campaigns and products
- Represent the editorial vision and brand voice at industry events, on panels, and in strategic partnerships
- Monitor competitor performance and industry trends to identify opportunities and inform content strategy
- Support positive commercial outcomes for the brand/ titles you work on, working closely with the commercial team to ideate and deliver commercial initiatives

Required Skills:

- Exceptional stakeholder engagement, networking and relationship management skills, with the demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships across Government, Defence,



the Australian Public Service, allied partner nations and industry to secure speakers, contributors, strategic partnerships, sponsorship opportunities and participation in editorial, commercial and event initiatives.
- Strong strategic planning and editorial leadership across multiple brands
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, and manage large teams in a fast-paced setting
- Exceptional editorial judgement, with a focus on audience-first, quality content
- High-level understanding of digital publishing trends, SEO, and analytics
- Advanced proficiency in CMS and newsroom tools
- Proficiency in leveraging AI tools to enhance journalism, with a focus on improving speed, productivity, accuracy, and the ability to scale content creation and analysis.
- Commercial mindset with experience in aligning editorial and business goals
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and stakeholder management skills
- Experience implementing systems and processes that drive productivity and innovation
- Ability to leverage social media platforms to support journalism by identifying news angles and tips, increasing the visibility of content, curating and posting material and actively contributing to the growth of the organisation’s channels.
- Capability to engage with government and government stakeholders to support journalism and facilitate access to event speakers, secure for event agendas and awards programs.
- Competence in broadcasting, podcasting, public speaking, moderating and emceeing, with the ability to represent the organisation as a brand ambassador across various platforms and events.
