Newcastle

Who are we, and why are we hiring?

4Tel builds the software that keeps transport networks moving safely, across heavy rail, light rail, buses, ferries and ports. From our Newcastle base we deliver systems used in Australia and overseas: train control, vehicle tracking, worksite protection and more. It’s real-world software that people rely on, and the business is growing. We’re looking for a Software Engineer to join the team. If you want your work to count, and care about doing it well, we’d love to hear from you.

About the role

This is a permanent, full-time position based on-site at our Warabrook (Newcastle, NSW) office, to facilitate close, daily team collaboration. You’ll join one of our scrum teams as a mid-level engineer, working alongside developers, QA and DevOps engineers to design, write and deliver well-crafted features end-to-end. We’re in the middle of rebuilding our core products on a modern stack, so you’ll get to help shape new design as well as maintain and improve the systems already in service. You’ll help sharpen how we build and raise the quality bar, with support and mentoring from senior engineers as you take on more complex, safety-critical work.

Key Responsibilities

·Feature Delivery: Build new functionality and enhancements across our product suite, from requirements through implementation, testing and release.

·Troubleshooting: Investigate, troubleshoot and resolve application defects and production issues.

·APIs & Data: Develop and consume REST APIs and work with the SQL databases behind them.

·Quality: Write and maintain automated tests, take part in code reviews, and support CI/CD and deployment.

·Agile Delivery: Work within a scrum team across planning, stand-ups, reviews and retrospectives, keeping requirements, documentation and traceability clear along the way.

·Collaboration:

Work closely with developers, QA and DevOps engineers to deliver reliable solutions.

Skills & Experience

We’re looking for a dependable, well-rounded engineer with strong problem-solving skills and a pragmatic mindset. Experience with our specific toolkit is a plus, but we highly value transferable skills and welcome candidates with equivalent experience in similar ecosystems:

·Experience: 3+ years of hands-on software development experience, with a degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

·Core Concepts: Solid grasp of software fundamentals, testing, and writing quality, maintainable code.

·Front End: Strong proficiency with TypeScript, paired with experience in a reactive JS framework like Angular, React or Vue.

·Back End: Robust proficiency with Java, paired with experience building backend services and APIs.

·Databases: SQL databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, MSSQL or similar.

·Tools & Workflow: Confident with Git and CI/CD pipelines, and comfortable with Docker. Collaboration runs through Jira and Confluence.

·Communication: Strong written and verbal communication, able to collaborate effectively within a team and manage your own work, with good attention to detail.

Nice to have

·Experience with real-time or safety-critical systems, or the rail/transport domain

·Exposure to systems-engineering process, requirements and documentation

·Experience modernising or maintaining established applications

·CI/CD and deployment tooling (e.g. Octopus Deploy) and familiarity with Docker

·Unit and integration testing experience

·Hardware/software integration experience

·Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence)

Why join us?

·Your work matters. The systems you build keep transport networks moving and the people who use and maintain them safe.

·You’ll help shape modern rebuilds, working with a current stack (TypeScript and Angular, Java, Docker and CI/CD).

·Real room to grow, with mentoring from senior engineers and hands-on involvement across the whole lifecycle, not just one corner of it.

·Solid ground: a privately owned business that’s growing steadily and invests in keeping good people for the long term.

·Flexible hours within an agreed framework, and a fun, friendly Newcastle team that still sweats the details that matter.

Application Process

This role is only open to permanent residents of Australia, preferably from the greater Newcastle area, or those willing to relocate to Newcastle at their own expense. Applicants must have a driver’s licence and own transport. We are not able to sponsor overseas applicants.

To apply, please submit your CV and a cover letter answering the following questions:

1. In terms of your background, experience and interests, why does this role appeal to you?
2. What experience do you have in software development, and with which languages and tools?
3. Why do you believe you will be successful in this position?
4. What is your expected annual base salary (excluding superannuation)?

Please submit your application as a Word or PDF document. Once we have a shortlist, we’ll invite those candidates to an interview.
