START is a short-term, phone-based program that works with men to address practical and presenting issues related to their use of violence.

START aims to help men take responsibility for their use of violence through individual counselling, while also building a network of informal and formal supports to help maintain meaningful change.

The opportunity

- Fixed-term contract ending 30.06.2027
- Predominately in-office with potential hybrid after 3 months

The Men’s Accountability Practitioner will engage with individuals through inbound and outreach calls, supporting those who have expressed a willingness to change their use of violence and abusive behaviours. Through therapeutic engagement, the practitioner will assist individuals to develop the language and self-awareness needed to understand and address their behaviour, fostering accountability and promoting positive behaviour change. This will be achieved through motivational interviewing, counselling, case management and risk assessment strategies. The role requires the practitioner to conduct comprehensive assessments, implement appropriate interventions to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the individual and their partners and children, and maintain high-quality client records and reporting standard.

Role Requirements

- Completed tertiary qualification in Psychology, Social Work, or a related discipline.




- Minimum two years' experience providing professional counselling, advocacy, or crisis support for men, preferably in the context of domestic and family violence.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver engaging and effective practice that promotes accountability among individuals who use violence.
- Proven skills and/or knowledge in conducting comprehensive domestic violence risk assessments and developing safety plans for individuals using violence, including effective risk management strategies.
- Knowledge and understanding of the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012, Domestic Violence Orders, and the Child Protection Act 1999 (desirable).
- Knowledge and understanding of gender-based violence, particularly in relation to domestic and family violence.
- Demonstrated ability to build, maintain, and enhance relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including both government and non-government organisations.
- Demonstrated cultural responsiveness and a commitment to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
- Strong IT and telephone communication skills.
