Advance Your Critical Care Career in a World-Class Tertiary ICU An exciting prospect exists for Post Graduate Fellow (PGF) in Intensive Care Medicine with a special interest in research, education, echocardiography, ECMO, or other significant ICU non-clinical portfolios to join the highly regarded Intensive Care Unit at John Hunter Hospital (JHH).

These positions are designed for PGFs seeking to develop an academic and leadership-focused career pathway while providing high-quality senior clinical care. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to expand their expertise in clinical research, medical education, quality improvement, and specialised ICU portfolios, while progressing their professional development within a leading tertiary referral centre. Working within a collaborative multidisciplinary team, you will deliver effective senior clinical services to patients across the Hunter

New England region while undertaking learning, teaching, and professional development activities that support ongoing growth as an Intensive Care specialist.

The new Acute Services Building, including a state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit scheduled to be opened in 2026, will significantly expand critical care capacity and provide a contemporary environment designed to support excellence in patient care, innovation, research and education.





Work in a Leading Tertiary Referral Centre John Hunter Hospital ICU provides care for a diverse and complex patient population across a large geographic catchment. Fellows gain exposure to high-acuity cases across:

- Trauma
- Neurosurgery
- Stroke
- Vascular surgery
- Cardiothoracic surgery
- Complex medical critical care

You will work alongside experienced intensivists and multidisciplinary teams dedicated to delivering exceptional patient outcomes. Partner with the Hunter Retrieval Service Our close partnership with the Hunter Retrieval Service (HRS) provides opportunities to contribute to specialist retrieval and critical care coordination for patients from rural and regional NSW, ensuring equitable access to life-saving intensive care services.

Develop Your Academic and Non-Clinical Portfolio

This role is ideally suited to candidates seeking dedicated experience in:

- Clinical research
- Medical education
- Echocardiography
- ECMO
- Quality and safety initiatives
- Leadership and service development

Fellows are encouraged to develop their individual interests and contribute meaningfully to the ongoing growth and innovation of the department. Extensive Teaching and Research Opportunities John Hunter Hospital ICU has a strong commitment to education and academic excellence. Opportunities include:

- Teaching and mentoring registrars and junior doctors
- Contributing to CICM Primary and Final Fellowship preparation
- Working with the University of Newcastle on undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs




- Participating in clinical research projects and quality improvement initiatives

Essential Requirement & Eligibility

- Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and
- New Zealand (CICM) An Australian Citizen; or
- A Permanent Resident of Australia; or
- A
- New Zealand Citizen holding a current New Zealand Passport; or
- The holder of an appropriate visa permitting you to live and work in Australia.

Employment of temporary visa holders will only be offered in line with the conditions and expiry date of the visa held. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
