We are currently seeking a dedicated and experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our Haematology team at Royal North Shore Hospital on a permanent full-time basis. This is a highly sought-after position that offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic, high-volume Haematology Laboratory within a major metropolitan hospital, operating on a 24/7 rotating roster.

Our lab provides a range of diagnostic services including routine Haematology, Coagulation, Morphology and Flow Cytometry. We are committed to fostering professional development through ongoing education, training, and upskilling, helping you reach your full career potential.

What you'll be doing Responsible for delivering a range of operational laboratory activities, including the coordination and provision of scientific and technical training, and the ongoing review, development and quality management of laboratory practices to ensure compliance with operational standards and procedures, quality standards and continual process improvement. The role involves performing Full Blood Count (FBC) and Coagulation testing on a diverse range of patients within Northern Sydney Local Health District, including Haematology and Oncology patients attending clinics.

The position is responsible for monitoring quality control using Levey-Jennings charts and interpreting Westgard Rules to ensure the accuracy and precision of patient results. The role also requires competency in complex blood film morphology to identify and report findings associated with haematological malignancies, malaria parasite speciation and Kleihauer testing. In addition,



there is the opportunity to develop specialised skills in Flow Cytometry and perform acute leukaemia and lymphoma screening on blood, bone marrow, tissue and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens.

- Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to pathology from a recognised tertiary institution
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services relevant to Haematology, including Morphology, Flow Cytometry or Special Coagulation
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Control Systems and computer programs such as Microsoft Office suite
- Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical and laboratory staff, along with report writing skills, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures
- Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment while working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes and contribute to a range of diagnostic skills relevant to the laboratory
- Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
- Sound understanding of legislation, policies and requirements that impact the laboratory environment including work health and safety and privacy requirements
