Magnetic Resonance Bulk Ore Sorting Technology
Mechanical Design Engineer (Junior-Mid) About NextOre
NextOre designs and builds magnetic resonance analysers (MRA) that give mining operations real-time ore grade data, enabling bulk sorting and rejection of waste rock before it enters the processing plant. Our technology, developed with CSIRO, is deployed on mine sites across Australia and internationally. We're a small, hands-on engineering team taking equipment from concept through detailed design, fabrication, site installation and commissioning.
The Role
We're looking for a junior-Mid level Mechanical Design Engineer with strong SolidWorks skills to join our engineering team. You'll work on the mechanical design of MRA systems and associated equipment conveyor interfaces, structural frames, enclosures, drive arrangements and site infrastructure supporting projects from concept through to installation. This is a hands-on role with direct exposure to a full product lifecycle, working closely with senior engineers, our fabrication partners and site teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop 3D models, assemblies and detailed manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks for mechanical components, structures and equipment skids.
- Support design of structural frames, platforms, walkways, guarding and mounting arrangements for the MRA and conveyor systems, in line with relevant Australian Standards (AS).
- Prepare assembly and detail drawings covering mechanical drive arrangements (motors, gearboxes, couplings, guards) and associated hardware.
- Assist with design changes and improvements arising from site feedback, testing and commissioning.
- Liaise with fabricators, suppliers and site personnel to ensure designs are practical to manufacture, install and maintain.
- Maintain drawing registers, BOMs and technical documentation,
and support ECNs/revisions through their lifecycle.
- Contribute to basic engineering calculations (structural, mechanical) and support senior engineers on more complex analysis.
- Occasional site visits to support installation, inspections or troubleshooting.
About You
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (or equivalent trade/diploma background with strong design experience).
Roughly 2-6 years' experience in mechanical design, ideally in mining, resources, industrial equipment or heavy machinery.
Robust, demonstrable proficiency in SolidWorks (parts, assemblies, drawings); exposure to PDM/PLM tools a plus.
Solid understanding of mechanical drafting standards, GD&T;, and drawing conventions.
Familiarity with structural steel design, welding symbols and fabrication methods.
Working knowledge of relevant standards (AS, ASME, AWS or similar) and a practical, safety-first mindset.
Good communication skills and the ability to work closely with fabricators, suppliers and site teams.
Self-motivated, organised, and comfortable owning tasks with appropriate support from senior engineers.
Nice to Have
- Experience with conveyors, screening/sorting equipment, or other bulk materials handling systems.
- Exposure to hydraulics/pneumatics, or equipment used in mining/resources environments.
- Basic FEA or hand-calculation experience for structural or mechanical components.
- Experience supporting site installation, commissioning or field service.
What NextOre Offers
- The chance to work on real, deployed hardware that solves a genuine industry problem - not just paper studies.
- Direct mentoring from senior mechanical and project engineers.
- Exposure to the full equipment lifecycle: design, fabrication, site installation and commissioning.
- A small, collaborative team where your work has visible impact.
