About us

Mookai Rosie Bi‑Bayan, founded in the 1980s by Rose Richards (‘Aunty Rosie’), is a leading health service supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, children and families from Cape York, the NPA and the Torres Strait while they are in Cairns for medical treatment. Our Health Accommodation Centre provides a safe, welcoming space for up to 24 women and 12 children, offering culturally supportive accommodation during their stay. In addition to this core service, MRBB delivers a comprehensive maternal health program that provides culturally safe antenatal and perinatal care, continuity of midwifery support and access to Cultural Birth Workers to ensure women are well supported throughout pregnancy, birth and the early postnatal period.

About the role

This role delivers culturally safe, evidence‑based antenatal and postnatal primary midwifery care to women accessing Mookai Rosie Bi‑Bayan (MRBB) services, working across both our maternal health program and Health Accommodation setting to provide advanced assessment, care planning, continuity of midwifery support, and coordinated access to specialist, hospital, community, and allied health services.

As our dual Registered Nurse/Midwife, you will provide holistic, woman‑centred care that meets each client’s clinical and cultural needs while ensuring timely connection to appropriate supports throughout pregnancy, birth, and the early postnatal period.

Note - Rostered hours may vary based on operational requirements. Flexibility is essential,



including occasional weekend work as required.

Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Midwifery OR Bachelor of Nursing + Graduate Diploma / Master of Midwifery.

Dual AHPRA registration as Registered Nurse (Division 1) and Registered Midwife.

Minimum 5 year post graduate experience working as a dual Registered Nurse and Midwife, preferably, within rural and remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Knowledge and understanding of the historical and contemporary health challenges affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with reference to the social, cultural, and systemic factors that influence health outcomes.

Extensive experience providing continuity‑of‑care midwifery across the pregnancy - birth - postnatal continuum.

Demonstrated experience managing high risk pregnancies, complex psychosocial cases, and acute maternal or neonatal presentations.

Be practiced in and poses the necessary skills to utilise computer‑based programs such as Microsoft, Best Practice and MIMASO, or ability to learn quickly.

Strong knowledge of evidence‑based midwifery care across antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal contexts.

Current First Aid and CPR.

Current Queensland Drivers Licence.

Work hours: 8:00am–4:00pm, with flexible working arrangements negotiable and occasional weekend work as required.

Rewarding salary range: $96,804.24 - $109,806.32 + plus shift allowances, if applicable.
