Start your career in a NATA accredited lab — and grow into running it
We're looking for a Materials Science, Materials Engineering or Applied Science graduate (or final-year student) who wants a genuine technical career, not just a job. You'll start conducting slip resistance testing to AS 4663 and AS 4586, and we'll back you to grow into a Lead Technician.
About us
Unimat is a NATA accredited testing laboratory (Accreditation No. 20847, ISO/IEC 17025) specialising in slip resistance testing. We test everything from rail stations and shopping centres to aquatic centres, hospitals and commercial fit‑outs. We're growing fast, and our lab is growing with us.
What you'll be doing
- Conducting wet pendulum and dry floor friction testing on site and in the lab, in accordance with AS 4663 and AS 4586
- Preparing test data and issuing NATA endorsed test reports and client summary reports
- Interpreting results against HB 198:2014 and relevant Standards to advise clients on compliance
- Maintaining equipment calibration, verification records and quality system documentation
- Actively reviewing and improving our testing procedures, templates and workflows — we want someone who spots a better way and speaks up
- Working on real accreditation projects, including extending our NATA scope into additional test methods
Where this role goes
This is deliberately structured as a career path, not a set technician role:
- Testing Technician — learn the methods, get signed off as a competent tester, build report‑writing capability, mostly site work.
- Senior Technician — become an authorised signatory, own method development and scope extension projects,
50/50 site and lab work.
- Lead Technician — manage a team of testing technicians, own the quality system and the lab's technical direction, mostly lab work.
Progression is reviewed on a 12 month cycle and driven by performance and method sign-offs. How fast you move is up to you. We'd rather promote from within than hire over the top of someone good.
What you'll bring
- A degree (completed or nearing completion) in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Applied Science or similar
- Strong attention to detail and a genuine interest in test methods, standards and data integrity
- Clear written English — a large part of this role is producing reports clients rely on
- A current driver’s licence and willingness to travel to sites across Sydney
- Comfortable working independently on site and as part of a small team
- Comfortable with communicating with clients from different industries such as construction, architecture, tiling, facility management, retailers
- Exposure to ISO/IEC 17025, NATA accreditation or Australian Standards testing is a bonus, not a requirement — we’ll train the right person
What we offer
- Full training and sign‑off in NATA accredited test methods
- A clearly defined progression path to Lead Technician
- Real ownership — your process improvements get implemented, not filed away
- Variety: 60% site work, 20% lab work and 20% technical project work
- Market-competitive salary based on experience, reviewed as you progress through sign‑offs
- A small, growing business where your work is visible and your input matters
