About Dunmore Lang College

Opened in 1972 as the first affiliated Residential College at Macquarie University, Dunmore Lang College accommodates 260 students coming predominantly from rural and regional NSW, as well as from interstate and around the world.

A strong scholarship programme supports students who would not otherwise be able to attend university to successfully complete their degrees. The College has developed a significant outreach to rural and regional, Aboriginal, and first-in-family students.

The students are supported by an integrated wellbeing care team of staff and student leaders including the Principal, Dean of Students, and Resident Advisers who all reside at the College as well as the Assistant Dean, Community Supervisor, and Senior Duty staff.

The College provides accommodation and full-board catering for approximately 260 students across two main academic semesters. Beyond the academic year, the College operates a vibrant commercial program, making its rooms, dining facilities, and conference spaces available to visiting educational providers and external clients during mid-semester and year-end breaks.

About the Role

The Catering Assistant / Kitchen Hand provides essential support to the catering team in delivering high-quality meals and hospitality services to residential students and staff. Working under the direction of the Chef or Catering Manager, this role contributes to the smooth daily operation of the college kitchen and dining facilities.

This role is well-suited to someone who enjoys working in a team environment, takes pride in a clean and secure kitchen, and is committed to supporting the wellbeing of the college community.

Key Responsibilities

Kitchen Operations

- Assist with food preparation tasks including washing, peeling, chopping, and portioning ingredients as directed by the chef
- Set up and pack down kitchen workstations before and after service
- Assist with cooking, plating, and serving meals to students and staff during breakfast, lunch, and dinner services
- Operate and clean commercial kitchen equipment safely and in accordance with instructions
- Receive, check, and store food deliveries following correct food storage procedures

Cleaning & Hygiene

- Wash dishes, pots, pans, and kitchen utensils using commercial dishwashing equipment
- Clean and sanitise benchtops, equipment, floors, and food preparation areas in accordance with the college cleaning schedule
- Maintain the cleanliness and organisation of cool rooms, dry storage areas, and waste disposal areas
- Dispose of waste correctly, including recycling and organic waste streams, in line with the college's waste management procedures

Food Safety & Compliance

- Handle, prepare, and store food in compliance with NSW Food Authority standards and the college's Food Safety Program
- Monitor and record temperatures of food, refrigerators, and cool rooms as required
- Report food safety concerns, hazards, or equipment faults to the supervisor promptly
- Follow all Work Health & Safety (WHS)



procedures, including the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

Dining Room & Service Support

- Set up the dining room prior to meal service, including laying tables, replenishing condiments, and arranging servery displays
- Assist with clearing and resetting the dining room between services
- Provide friendly and courteous service to students and guests in the dining room
- Assist with the preparation and service of catered functions and special events as required

General Duties

- Work cooperatively and respectfully as part of the catering team
- Follow all college policies and procedures, including the Code of Conduct
- Undertake any other duties as reasonably directed by the Chef or Catering Manager
- Uphold the Colleges values and ethos,maintaininga welcoming and inclusive space for all students and treating all staff and students with respect
- Have a clear understanding of confidentiality including the importance of treating students’ information with complete respect

Selection Criteria

Essential

- Understanding of, or willingness to learn, food safety and hygiene principles
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
- Physical fitness to perform tasks involving extended standing, lifting, and carrying
- Reliable, punctual, and well-presented
- Willingness to work variable shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and school holidays
- Current Working with Children Check (WWCC) clearance, or willingness to obtain prior to commencement

Desirable

- Previous experience in a commercial kitchen, cafe, restaurant, or institutional catering environment
- Food Safety Supervisor Certificate (NSW)
- Current NSW Food Handler Certificate, or willingness to obtain prior to commencement
- Experience with commercial dishwashing and catering equipment
- First Aid Certificate
- Understanding of dietary requirements and allergen management

Conditions of Employment

- Satisfactory Working with Children Check (WWCC) clearance issued by the NSW Office of the Children's Guardian
- NSW Police Check
- Completion of all mandatory college induction and compliance training prior to or at commencement
- Compliance with the college's policies and procedures, including the Code of Conduct, WHS Policy, and Food Safety Program
- Pre-employment health declaration may be required
