The Role: Lead the Crew. Set the Standard. Deliver Safe Production.
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Mining Leading Hand to join the mining team at Blair Athol Coal Mine. Working a 7 days on, 7 days off roster rotating between day and night shift, this role is suited to a capable mining professional who is ready to step beyond operating duties and take a more active role in frontline leadership.
Reporting to the Mining Supervisor, you will play an important part in coordinating the crew, maintaining safe and productive work practices and supporting the delivery of the mine plan. You will provide practical direction in the field, reinforce site standards and help ensure work is completed safely, efficiently and in line with operational priorities.
This is an opportunity to build your leadership capability in a visible operational role and establish a strong pathway toward future site leadership positions. You will work closely with experienced supervisors and operational leaders while continuing to develop your skills in crew leadership, communication, decision making and production execution.
The Opportunity
As Mining Leading Hand, you will support the Mining Supervisor in the safe and effective coordination of daily mining activities. You will help translate the mine plan into clear field priorities, allocate and coordinate work as directed,
monitor progress and provide timely feedback on safety, equipment, production and operational issues.
You will be a trusted point of contact for the crew and an important link between operators and the Mining Supervisor. The role requires a strong field presence, sound judgement, clear communication and the confidence to lead by example while maintaining positive and respectful working relationships across the operation.
Responsibilities of the Role
Support the Mining Supervisor in coordinating crew activities and delivering the mine plan safely, efficiently and in accordance with site requirements.
Provide clear direction to operators regarding work priorities, equipment allocation, operating areas, hazards, controls and expected standards.
Maintain a robust and visible presence in the field, monitoring work practices, production progress, equipment interactions and compliance with approved plans and procedures.
Lead by example in all aspects of safety, behaviour, accountability, teamwork and operational discipline.
Participate in pre start and return to work meetings, workplace inspections, risk assessments and other operational planning activities, ensuring relevant information is clearly communicated to the crew.
Identify hazards and changing conditions, confirm appropriate controls are in place and elevate safety or operational concerns to the Mining Supervisor when required.
Monitor shift performance and provide accurate updates on production, delays, equipment availability, work progress and emerging issues.
Assist with coordinating equipment movements, work area changes, crib relief and other shift activities to support safe and productive operations.
Coach and support operators in safe work practices, equipment standards, task execution and continuous improvement.
Promote a positive crew culture built on respect, accountability, communication and shared responsibility for safe production.
Work collaboratively with Mining, Maintenance, Technical Services, CHPP and other site teams to support coordinated and effective shift execution.
Act in accordance with the site Safety and Health Management System, statutory obligations, operational procedures and TerraCom standards at all times.
About You
You are an experienced mining professional who is respected in the field and ready to take the next step into frontline leadership. You understand that effective leadership is built through consistency, communication, sound judgement and a willingness to support the crew while maintaining clear standards.
You will bring:
Demonstrated experience in open cut mining operations, preferably within an open cut coal environment.
Strong practical knowledge of mining activities, mobile equipment interactions, operating standards and field based risk controls.
Previous experience providing informal leadership, mentoring operators, coordinating work activities or acting in a relief leadership capacity will be highly regarded.
The ability to communicate clear instructions, listen to operational concerns and build effective working relationships with operators, supervisors and other site teams.
A strong commitment to safety, with the confidence to address unsafe behaviour, reinforce standards and elevate concerns when required.
Sound judgement and practical problem solving skills, particularly when responding to changing conditions and operational priorities.
A calm, reliable and accountable approach, with the ability to remain effective during busy or challenging shifts.
A genuine interest in developing leadership capability and progressing toward future supervisory or site leadership opportunities.
Relevant competencies, licences and site requirements for the position, together with a current driver’s licence.
A team focused mindset and a commitment to continuous improvement, operational discipline and achieving safe production outcomes.
