What we do
The Infrastructure and Operations Division is part of the Technology and Digital Programs Group.
The Division is responsible for maintaining national critical infrastructure for Services Australia and across government. We deliver a robust, secure, and resilient ICT environment so Australian citizens can access government services 24x7.
The Core Infrastructure Branch provides core IT infrastructure services to Services Australia and our shared services partners. Supporting critical applications that deliver services across Centrelink, Medicare, Child Support, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Social Services and others.
About the role
The Mainframe Systems Programmer is responsible for the ongoing support and stability of the Mainframe platform while delivering a mix of technology projects and business as usual functions, such as implementing new functions and features, upgrade/maintenance of operating systems, system software and hardware, troubleshooting problems and performance issues.
The Mainframe Systems Programmer uses their experience in large complex enterprise IT environments to implement innovative solutions working across infrastructure and application development teams to ensure solutions meet the availability and resilient standards of the mainframe. They will be highly autonomous, capable of taking the lead on multiple products within the Mainframe platform, working alongside and collaborating with other technical leads to ensure the system is maintained and upgraded smoothly and seamlessly.
The role requires leadership and management skills. You’ll provide mentoring and direction to team members to assist in their learning and development on the Mainframe platform. You will exercise independence and effective decision-making considering the wider implications under broad direction from the leadership team.

The key duties of the position include:
- Lead the design, improvement and ongoing operation of the mainframe platform to ensure high availability, performance and resilience of critical systems.
- Set technical direction and contribute to platform roadmaps and priorities, aligning mainframe capability with agency and divisional objectives.
- Oversee delivery of system upgrades, enhancements and maintenance activities, ensuring risks are managed and services remain stable.
- Provide expert advice on complex technical issues, guiding resolution of high-impact incidents and supporting continuous improvement of system reliability.
- Work closely with internal teams,
vendors and partners to deliver integrated solutions that meet service and security requirements.
- Lead and influence automation and modernisation initiatives to improve efficiency, reduce risk and enhance system performance.
- Contribute to planning, reporting and governance activities, including preparing input to briefs, performance reporting and strategic documentation.
- Lead and develop staff by coaching, mentoring and building technical capabilities, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration and continuous improvement.
Eligibility
Essential Requirements:
- Security Clearance level required: Negative Vetting Level 1 (or ability to obtain and maintain).
Desirable Qualifications or Experience:
- Tertiary Education qualification in IT or equivalent area of study.
- Minimum 3 years experience working in a similar role within a complex ICT workplace.
In accordance with section 22(6) of the Public Service Act 1999, Services Australia requires applicants to be Australian citizens to be eligible for employment with Services Australia.
An applicant’s suitability for employment with the agency will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes but is not limited to a national police history check, referee checks, code of conduct check and an employment history integrity check.
Some positions within Services Australia may be required to work in settings where mandatory vaccinations are required. Staff in such positions will need to demonstrate that they meet the vaccination requirements or have a relevant exemption.

Services Australia’s workforce operates using an agile approach, and all staff should be prepared to redeploy to critical frontline functions as required.
