Role: Senior AWS Cloud Infrastructure Engineer Location: ACT Employment type: Contract Working arrangements: Hybrid Security clearance: Must have Baseline clearance Must be available for on-site work when required. Some out-of-hours support work may be required. A minimum 2 days per fortnight in the office. The client strongly prefers candidates are located within ACT (and surrounds). The client may consider exceptionally strong candidates located outside the ACT.

Job details

The client is seeking an experienced AWS Cloud Engineer to support the GovAI program's AWS cloud hosting and platform capability. The program is expanding its platform offerings to include AWS cloud capabilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing and maintaining secure AWS cloud environments, ensuring security controls aligned with the Information Security Manual (ISM) are incorporated throughout the platform lifecycle. The role includes AWS infrastructure design and management, security and compliance activities, optimisation of cloud services, support for APS projects using AWS services, and provision of technical leadership and knowledge transfer. Candidates should demonstrate strong experience in AWS cloud engineering, infrastructure as code, DevOps/DevSecOps practices, cloud security, automation, and government or enterprise cloud environments. Experience with AWS AI services (such as Bedrock), Microsoft Azure, Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD pipelines and AWS certifications will be highly regarded.

Key duties and responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing and maintaining AWS cloud-based systems to support a critical Whole of Australian Government program.



The role will ensure robust security measures, aligned to the Australian Government Information Security Manual (ISM), are incorporated throughout the cloud environment.

- Design, deploy and manage AWS infrastructure, including EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda and VPC services.
- Develop and implement security policies and procedures in line with ISM controls to safeguard cloud resources and data.
- Conduct security assessments, audits and vulnerability testing to maintain a secure cloud environment.
- Monitor and optimise the performance, availability and scalability of AWS cloud solutions.
- Design, deploy and manage cloud infrastructure through Infrastructure as Code practices and automation tools.
- Support APS projects seeking to utilise AWS services within the hosting environment, including provision of technical guidance and documentation.
- Contribute to DevOps and DevSecOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines and cloud automation activities.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring and knowledge transfer to internal teams and stakeholders.
- Work collaboratively with technical and business stakeholders to support the ongoing development and operation of secure AWS cloud capabilities.

Technical Skills and Experience Required

- Solid experience designing, deploying and maintaining AWS cloud environments.




- Experience securing AWS environments within government operational and security frameworks, including implementation of security controls aligned to the Information Security Manual (ISM).
- Experience deploying and configuring AWS services using Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation and/or Ansible.
- In-depth experience in cloud engineering, cloud architecture, DevOps or related technical roles with proven expertise across AWS services.
- Experience with containerisation and orchestration technologies, including Kubernetes, Docker and associated orchestration tools.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automation and DevSecOps practices.
- Understanding of Identity and Access Management (IAM) principles and cloud security best practices.
- Experience using Microsoft DevOps or similar toolsets such as Jenkins, Git and ELK Stack.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to provide technical advice and knowledge transfer to stakeholders.

Desirable Skills

- Experience deploying and supporting AWS AI services and platforms, including Amazon Bedrock.
- Experience working with Microsoft Azure services.
- AWS certifications such as Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer or similar.
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Shell or PowerShell.
- Experience with cloud migration strategies and large-scale migration activities.
- Experience working within Agile delivery environments.
