The Practice Nurse – Skin is responsible for delivering high‑quality, evidence‑based nursing care within a primary care setting, with a focus on skin cancer prevention, early detection, and procedural support. The role supports medical practitioners in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of skin conditions, while promoting patient education and preventive health strategies.

Key Responsibilities

- 1 Clinical Practice
- Undertake comprehensive skin assessments, including full‑body skin checks (within scope of practice and under GP direction)
- Assist in the identification and documentation of suspicious lesions and skin abnormalities
- Perform dermoscopy assistance and clinical imaging where appropriately trained
- Provide wound care management, including dressings and suture removal
- Administer medications and vaccines in accordance with legislation, protocols, and competency
- Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical documentation in line with medico‑legal requirements
- 2 Procedural Assistance




- Prepare patients and clinical rooms for skin procedures (biopsies, excisions, cryotherapy)
- Assist medical practitioners during procedures using aseptic technique
- Ensure correct handling, labelling, and dispatch of pathology specimens
- Monitor patients pre‑ and post‑procedure and respond to clinical deterioration if required
- Educate patients on sun protection, skin cancer awareness, and self‑examination techniques
- Support national and practice‑based preventive health initiatives
- Provide clear pre‑ and post‑procedure instructions and follow‑up care advice
- 4 Care Coordination & Administration
- Manage recall and reminder systems for results, follow‑ups, and routine skin checks
- Liaise with pathology providers and ensure timely follow‑up of results
- Support telehealth and digital health systems, including secure data handling
- Contribute to efficient patient flow and appointment coordination
- 5 Infection Prevention & Control
- Adhere to infection prevention and control policies consistent with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners Standards for General Practices
- Maintain sterilisation processes and equipment in accordance with Australian guidelines




- Ensure clinical areas are clean, stocked, and compliant with accreditation requirements
- 6 Professional Practice
- Practice in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia standards, codes, and guidelines
- Maintain current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
- Work within individual scope of practice and demonstrated competencies
- Participate in continuing professional development, including dermatology/skin cancer training
- Collaborate effectively with GPs, specialists, and the multidisciplinary team
- 7 Quality Improvement & Safety
- Participate in quality improvement activities, audits, and accreditation processes
- Support compliance with the Australian College of Nursing professional practice framework
- Identify, report, and respond to clinical incidents and risks
- Contribute to continuous improvement of clinical protocols and patient outcomes

Key Selection Criteria

- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA
- Demonstrated experience in general practice or dermatology/skin cancer setting
- Knowledge of infection control standards and accreditation requirements
- Competence in wound care and assisting with minor procedures
- Strong communication and patient education skills
- Ability to work autonomously and within a multidisciplinary team
- Training or certification in dermoscopy or skin cancer medicine
- Experience in performing skin checks or lesion photography
- Familiarity with Best Practice or similar clinical software
