Electrical / Power Systems
Travel
Project and site travel as required
Develop into an engineer trusted to find practical answers to unfamiliar and complex problems.
The Opportunity
Prizm Engineering is seeking an ambitious graduate or early-career Electrical Engineer who wants to develop strong, practical engineering capability across industrial, mining, utilities, water, ports and infrastructure projects.
You will work directly with experienced engineers, contribute to live projects and progressively take ownership of calculations, site investigations, design documentation, technical decisions and project delivery.
Some assignments will be well defined. Others will involve incomplete records, operating plants, brownfield constraints and competing technical and commercial requirements. We develop engineers who can return to first principles, identify what is missing, ask positive questions, use modern tools intelligently and produce work they can explain and defend.
We are looking for someone who approaches uncertainty with curiosity and discipline: investigate, think critically, ask for input, verify and follow through.
What You Will Work On
- Design of electrical power distribution systems, switchboards, motor control centres, transformers, generators, motors, variable speed drives and associated control systems.
- HV and LV single-line diagrams, schematics, layouts, cable schedules, equipment schedules, specifications, scopes of work and technical reports.
- Engineering calculations and studies, including load assessments, cable sizing, voltage drop, fault levels, protection, earthing, motor starting and equipment duty checks.
- Brownfield site investigations, condition assessments, data collection, drawing verification and development of practical modification strategies.
- Equipment selection, technical bid evaluations, vendor coordination, design reviews, construction support, testing and commissioning activities.
- Project planning, cost and schedule awareness, client communication and coordination with drafting, mechanical, civil, structural and control-system disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver accurate engineering work under appropriate supervision, in accordance with project requirements, company systems and relevant Australian standards.
- Develop calculations, drawings and technical documents that clearly communicate the design intent and can be independently checked.
- Identify assumptions, interfaces, missing information, safety issues and technical risks early rather than allowing them to become project problems.
- Plan and manage assigned tasks, communicate progress and constraints, and meet agreed quality, budget and programme requirements.
- Participate in site inspections, client meetings, design reviews, workshops and construction or commissioning support as required.
- Work constructively with engineers, drafters, contractors, suppliers and clients, and respond professionally to review comments and feedback.
- Continuously improve technical templates, calculations, workflows and knowledge resources where a better way of working is identified.
- Maintain clear records,
revision control and traceability of engineering decisions.
How We Develop Engineers
Our aim is to develop engineers with both technical depth and practical judgement. You will receive direct mentoring from senior engineers and will learn by working through real problems.
- First-principles engineering: understanding why a design works, not simply repeating a previous solution.
- Practical application: considering installation, operation, maintenance, access, outages, constructability and site conditions.
- Engineering judgement: separating facts from assumptions, evaluating evidence and knowing when further verification is required.
- Quality and accountability: producing work that is clear, checked, traceable and professionally defensible.
- Commercial awareness: understanding scope, fees, schedule, risk, client expectations and the value of timely communication.
- Progressive responsibility: taking ownership of larger and more complex work packages as capability is demonstrated.
AI-Assisted Engineering and Better Ways of Working
Prizm actively develops AI-assisted tools to improve research, document development, workflow automation and knowledge capture. You will be encouraged to become highly capable with these tools and to identify opportunities to remove low-value repetitive work.
AI is treated as an engineering assistant, not a substitute for engineering judgement. Outputs must be independently checked, confidential information must be protected, assumptions must be visible and the responsible engineer remains accountable for the final work.
As part of a growing consultancy, you will see how technical delivery, client relationships and the business of engineering fit together. Strong ideas are welcomed regardless of job title. You may help develop a new calculation tool, improve a design process, prepare a proposal, automate a repetitive workflow or contribute to a new service offering.
The environment suits people who enjoy responsibility, variety and high impact technical work.
About You
We are looking for capability and mindset, not a candidate who already knows every system or standard. Strong candidates will demonstrate:
- A genuine interest in becoming a highly capable electrical engineer and a willingness to invest in ongoing technical development.
- Curiosity and resourcefulness: the discipline to investigate unfamiliar problems and learn what is required to complete the work properly.
- Strong attention to detail, while retaining an understanding of the overall system, project purpose and client outcome.
- Sound time management, personal organisation and the ability to prioritise competing tasks.
- A high standard of written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain technical matters clearly.
- Coachability,
professional humility and the confidence to ask questions before uncertainty becomes rework.
- Ownership of commitments and a commitment to quality, safety, integrity and continuous improvement.
- The ability to work independently when appropriate and collaboratively when the problem requires multiple disciplines or perspectives.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent qualification recognised for professional engineering practice in Australia.
- Graduate to approximately 6 years of relevant experience.
- Eligibility for membership of Engineers Australia and a willingness to work towards Chartered and RPEQ registration when appropriately experienced.
- Strong general computer capability and confidence learning new engineering software and digital tools.
- Current Australian driver licence, or the ability to obtain one, and willingness to attend project sites as required.
- Australian working rights.
- Physical ability and willingness to attend client sites and safely undertake site inspections as required.
- Exposure to industrial, mining, water, utility, port or infrastructure electrical systems.
- Practical experience through vacation work, site work, an electrical trade background, university projects or hands‑on technical interests.
- Experience with AutoCAD and electrical analysis or design software.
- Capability in advanced Excel, Python, scripting, data analysis, automation or other tools that improve engineering productivity.
- Awareness of Australian electrical standards and Queensland professional engineering requirements.
What Prizm Offers
- Direct mentoring and technical review from experienced electrical engineers.
- Early exposure to meaningful project work, operating sites and real client decisions.
- A broad project base that supports both strong fundamentals and the development of specialist capability.
- A modern, AI-enabled working environment that encourages automation, experimentation and continual improvement.
- Support for relevant professional development and progression towards Chartered and RPEQ registration.
- Visibility of the full consulting process, including technical delivery, project management, client relationships and business development.
- Career progression based on demonstrated capability, judgement, reliability and contribution.
- A collaborative team in which high standards are expected, solid performance is recognised, and a healthy work-life balance is valued.
Who Should Apply
This role is intended for a graduate or early-career engineer who is motivated by capability, responsibility and the opportunity to become exceptionally good at the profession. You may be academically strong, practically minded, highly self-directed or simply determined to learn faster than your current environment allows.
You do not need to arrive as a finished engineer. You do need to care about the quality of your work, use your time well, respond positively to rigorous review and be willing to learn whatever the project requires.
