Our client is a high profile NSW government department that offer extensive education service.
Role Description:
The Senior Software Engineer will work within a high-performing transformation program team - working end-end across a major initiative to design, build, and operate integrations on AWS. This role owns both the integration logic and the engineering foundations supporting it—provisioning infrastructure as code and applying sound DevOps practices.
Responsibilities:
- Design and build integration flows on AWS that pull data from relational databases or upstream REST APIs and push it into external vendor products via the vendors’ API interfaces.
- Implement transformation and mapping between source data and vendor API data contracts (JSON, XML, CSV).
- Implement and secure appropriate authentication and authorisation for inbound and outbound REST calls (e.g. OAuth 2.0 flows, OIDC, JWT, API keys, mutual TLS, HMAC request signing, AWS SigV4).
- Build integrations using AWS components such as API Gateway, Lambda, EventBridge, SQS, SNS, Step Functions, and Secrets Manager / Parameter Store.
- Write and maintain Terraform to provision and manage AWS infrastructure across environments.
- Set up and maintain CI/CD pipelines (e.g. AWS CodePipeline/CodeBuild, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI) for automated build, test, and deployment.
- Implement robust error handling, retries, idempotency, dead-letter handling, pagination, and rate-limit management for API interactions.
- Build observability into integrations — structured logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting (e.g. CloudWatch, X-Ray).
- Partner with external vendors on API specifications, sandbox testing, throttling, pagination, and webhook patterns.
- Lead technical design, build, and delivery,
including runbooks and operational readiness, working within Agile delivery.
Skills and Experience:
- Solid experience designing and delivering API-based and data integrations between heterogeneous systems.
- Hands-on experience with AWS integration services, including API Gateway, Lambda, EventBridge, SQS/SNS, Step Functions, Secrets Manager / Parameter Store, and IAM.
- Strong, practical understanding of REST API authentication and authorisation: OAuth 2.0 (including client credentials), OIDC, JWT, API keys, mutual TLS, HMAC signing, and AWS SigV4.
- Experience extracting data from relational databases (SQL) and from external or vendor REST APIs.
- Experience pushing data into vendor products through vendor-provided APIs, handling pagination, rate limits, retries, idempotency, and webhooks.
- Infrastructure as Code with Terraform for AWS, across multiple environments.
- CI/CD pipeline setup and general DevOps practices (automated build, test, and deployment).
- Solid programming and scripting skills (e.g. Python, Node.js, Java, or Go).
- Data transformation and mapping between differing schemas and API contracts.
- Government, education, or other large/regulated environment experience is strongly desired.
- Experience integrating with enterprise identity providers (e.g. Azure Entra ID) for OAuth/OIDC and single sign-on is an advantage.
