Male Disability Support Worker – Southside Canberra ACT

We are seeking a compassionate, experienced, and proactive Disability Support Worker to

join our team in Southside Canberra. This rewarding opportunity involves supporting a

young participant living with complex disabilities and behavioural support needs, helping

them build independence, engage safely within the community, and achieve meaningful

personal goals in a structured and supportive workplace.

Your Role & Our Client

Our client is a young male participant living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Level 3), Mild

Intellectual Disability, ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Language Disorder,

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), and Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) Type E, which

impacts balance, coordination, and physical endurance.

He enjoys practical hands-on activities, cooking, sports, humour, structured routines, and

community participation. The ideal support worker will be calm, confident, patient, and

able to provide consistent support while maintaining clear professional boundaries.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Living & Community Access

- Support participation in daily living activities and household routines.
- Assist with community access, recreational activities, appointments, and social engagement.
- Encourage participation in practical activities, cooking, sport, and other meaningful interests.
- Promote independence while ensuring safety and wellbeing.

Medication & Health Management

- Provide prompting, monitoring, and support with medication administration and compliance.
- Monitor health and wellbeing and report concerns appropriately.
- Support implementation of health-related care plans.

Nutrition & Meal Support

- Assist with meal planning, grocery shopping, and meal preparation.
- Encourage healthy eating habits and balanced nutrition.
- Support the participant to develop practical cooking and food preparation skills.

Behaviour & Emotional Support

- Use proactive,



low-arousal approaches to support emotional regulation.
- Implement behaviour support strategies in line with care plans and Behaviour Support Plans.
- Maintain calm and consistent responses during periods of distress or escalation.
- Support the participant to develop positive coping strategies and emotional resilience.

Communication & Relationship Building

- Communicate using clear, simple, and structured instructions.
- Allow appropriate processing time and adapt communication to individual needs.
- Build rapport through respectful, person-centred interactions.
- Maintain consistent routines and expectations to promote stability and success.

Personal Care & Household Support

- Support personal care routines as required.
- Assist with maintaining a safe and organised living environment.
- Encourage skill development and increasing independence in everyday tasks.

About You

- Previous experience supporting people with autism, intellectual disability, complex behaviours, youth support, or high-intensity disability services is essential.
- Strong understanding of person-centred and trauma-informed support practices.
- Able to remain calm, patient, and professional in challenging situations.
- Confident implementing behaviour support strategies and maintaining professional boundaries.
- Physically capable of supporting an active participant who enjoys sport and community activities.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Able to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Essential Qualifications

- Certificate III or IV in Individual Support, Disability, Mental Health, Community Services, Youth Work, or equivalent.
- NDIS Worker Screening Check (current or willing to obtain).
- ACT Working With Vulnerable People (WWVP) Registration.
- National Police Check (current).
- Current First Aid and CPR Certificates.
- Australian Driver’s Licence and reliable insured vehicle.
- Availability to work a combination of weekday, evening, weekend, and overnight passive shifts.
