Position Overview

The General Practitioner (GP) is responsible for providing high-quality, safe, and culturally appropriate medical care to patients within a community health setting.

The GP will play a key role in clinical decision-making, supporting positive health outcomes through evidence-based practice and working collaboratively with nurses, Aboriginal Health Workers, specialists, and allied health professionals.

The role requires a strong commitment to delivering holistic, patient-centred healthcare while supporting the principles of Aboriginal community control and culturally safe practice.

Key Responsibilities

The General Practitioner will:

- Provide comprehensive primary healthcare services in accordance with best practice standards.
- Deliver culturally appropriate healthcare that recognises the individual needs, circumstances, and cultural identity of each patient.
- Support prevention, early detection, and ongoing management of chronic disease.
- Provide assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute and ongoing health conditions.
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.




- Participate in continuous quality improvement activities and contribute to improved patient outcomes.
- Support Aboriginal community empowerment and culturally safe healthcare practices.
- Maintain compliance with relevant legislation, professional standards, and medical practice requirements in Queensland.

Clinical Responsibilities

The GP will be responsible for:

- Providing high-quality primary healthcare services to patients of all ages and health needs.
- Conducting patient consultations, including history taking, examination, diagnosis, investigation, and treatment.
- Supporting patients in healthcare decision‑making and improving health literacy.
- Managing chronic health conditions in accordance with recognised clinical guidelines.
- Prescribing medications appropriately and safely.
- Providing preventative healthcare advice and health promotion activities.
- Conducting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health assessments where required.
- Ordering and reviewing diagnostic investigations and results.
- Referring patients to appropriate healthcare providers and specialists.
- Reviewing hospital discharge summaries and specialist correspondence.
- Preparing and reviewing chronic disease management plans and team care arrangements.

Clinical Governance and Quality Requirements

The GP will:

- Participate in clinical governance activities and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support safe, effective, and evidence-based clinical care.
- Maintain compliance with accreditation standards and organisational policies.
- Participate in quality assurance processes, audits, and professional development activities.
- Promote patient safety and effective risk management practices.

Administrative Responsibilities

The GP will maintain accurate and timely clinical records, including:

- Patient medical histories
- Specialist referrals
- Prescriptions
- Medicare documentation and claiming requirements
- Care plans and management plans




- Investigations and diagnostic results
- Patient recalls and follow‑up systems
- Mandatory reporting requirements
- Patient information management and confidentiality requirements

- Support community participation in improving healthcare services.

Essential Requirements and Qualifications

The successful applicant must have:

- Current medical registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Appropriate training and experience in general practice.
- Eligibility to work as a General Practitioner in Queensland.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a PRODA number.
- Current Open C Class Driver’s Licence (Queensland).
- Current Blue Card (or eligibility to obtain one).
- Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) or Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).
- Experience working within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services.
- Demonstrated understanding of culturally safe and community-focused healthcare delivery.
