Most infrastructure roles are focused on maintaining environments.
This one is about solving the problems nobody else can.
The strongest Senior Infrastructure Engineers don't simply know infrastructure. They know how to think when something goes wrong. They remain calm under pressure, work methodically through complex technical issues and take ownership until the problem is resolved.
If that sounds like the way you approach engineering, this opportunity is likely to appeal.
Our client is a leading Australian healthcare organisation operating one of Australia's most technologically advanced technology environments. Infrastructure reliability directly supports clinicians, patient services and better outcomes for patients.
Rather than inheriting a neglected environment, you'll join a mature, well-invested platform that continues to evolve through continuous improvement rather than large-scale rebuilds.
Why this role matters
This is the organisation's most senior hands-on infrastructure engineering position and final technical escalation point.
When complex infrastructure issues can't be resolved elsewhere, you'll lead the technical response while helping improve the environment over time.
The hiring manager is looking for someone who enjoys engineering, thinks proactively and naturally looks for opportunities to improve reliability, security and operational efficiency.
The environment
You'll support a broad Microsoft infrastructure setting spanning cloud, virtualisation, storage and modern workplace technologies.
Core technologies include:
- Citrix XenServer
- IGEL
- AWS / EC2
- Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Active Directory and hybrid infrastructure
You'll also work across Citrix Virtual Apps, endpoint management, security,
Teams Rooms, VPN technologies and broader Microsoft cloud services.
Strong troubleshooting capability and solid foundations across the core technologies are far more important than having experience with every product in the environment.
The opportunity
Current priorities include:
- Active Directory and Group Policy rationalisation
- New desktop Standard Operating Environment
- Longer-term migration away from hybrid Exchange and Active Directory
- Ongoing improvement of documentation and operational standards
You'll also mentor junior engineers and contribute to a collaborative, knowledge-sharing culture.
As part of a 24/7 healthcare environment, occasional after-hours maintenance and incident response are required.
- Time off in lieu is provided.
About you
You'll likely be a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, Systems Engineer or experienced Level 3 Engineer who has operated as the final escalation point within a complex production environment.
You're comfortable explaining not only how you solved a problem, but why you approached it that way.
You enjoy understanding technology, solving difficult technical challenges and helping others develop their capability.
Healthcare experience isn't essential.
What matters most is strong infrastructure engineering capability, sound technical judgement and a genuine passion for delivering reliable technology.
Working arrangements
The role is based in the Inner West five minutes from Eveleigh.
During your first 90-120 days you'll primarily work on site while learning the environment, with approximately one day per week from home.
Post this period, the role moves to a genuine hybrid arrangement of approximately 50% office and 50% home.
