Senior Mechanical Engineer – RPEQ | Contract / Part-Time

Approx. 2 Days per Week + Project-Based Support | Hemmant, Brisbane

Are you an experienced RPEQ Mechanical Engineer looking for a flexible role where your technical expertise and leadership can make a genuine impact?

Industrial Plastics is seeking a highly experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer with current RPEQ registration to join our team on a flexible contract basis.

This is an opportunity for an accomplished engineer to take a senior technical and mentoring role across complex industrial projects – providing engineering oversight, guiding a growing team of junior engineers, and helping deliver practical engineered solutions for clients across water and wastewater treatment, chemical processing, mining and heavy industry.

The role is expected to be approximately two days per week, with flexibility for additional involvement on major or specialist projects as required.

The Role

You’ll act as a senior technical authority within our engineering team, combining hands‑on mechanical engineering expertise, project oversight and people leadership.

You’ll be responsible for:

- Providing senior mechanical engineering oversight and technical direction across projects

- Reviewing engineering designs, calculations, drawings, specifications and technical documentation

- Providing RPEQ review, verification and sign-off where required and within your area of competency

- Leading technical and design reviews for complex industrial projects

- Mentoring, guiding and developing our junior engineers

- Helping coordinate engineering priorities and providing clear technical direction across multiple projects

- Supporting engineers through complex design challenges and helping strengthen their technical judgment

- Working closely with production and fabrication teams to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable and fit for purpose

- Providing technical input throughout the project lifecycle, from concept and design through to manufacture, installation and delivery

- Engaging confidently with customers, consultants, contractors and other project stakeholders

- Helping strengthen engineering standards, documentation, systems and processes across the business

About You

Current RPEQ registration in Mechanical Engineering is mandatory for this position.

We’re looking for someone who brings both technical depth and strong leadership capability.

Ideally, you will have:

- Current RPEQ registration – Mechanical Engineering – essential

- Significant professional mechanical engineering experience

- Robust experience in water or wastewater treatment, chemical processing, mining, process plant, industrial infrastructure or similar heavy industry environments

- Experience with mechanical equipment, tanks, piping, process systems, fabricated structures or related industrial projects

- Solid engineering design, analysis, review and problem-solving capabilities

- Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring or supervising engineers

- The ability to confidently review the work of junior engineers and provide constructive technical direction

- Strong project and stakeholder management skills

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

- The ability to communicate effectively across all levels – from junior engineers and workshop teams to customers, consultants and senior management

- A practical, commercially aware engineering mindset

Experience with thermoplastics, HDPE, PP, PVC, engineered tanks, piping or fabricated process equipment would be highly regarded but is not essential.

Above all, we’re looking for someone who can bring experience, sound engineering judgement and leadership to the team.

Why Industrial Plastics?

Industrial Plastics is a Brisbane‑based engineering and manufacturing business delivering custom‑engineered thermoplastic solutions for demanding industrial applications.

Our work spans mining, water and wastewater treatment, chemical processing, infrastructure and heavy industry, with projects ranging from engineered tanks and process equipment to complex custom‑fabricated systems.

Unlike a traditional consultancy environment, our engineering and manufacturing teams work side‑by‑side. You’ll have the opportunity to see projects move from concept and design through to fabrication on our workshop floor and final delivery.

This role offers:

- Flexible contract arrangement – approximately 2 days per week

- Additional project‑based involvement when required

- Challenging and technically varied industrial projects

- The opportunity to act as a senior technical authority within a growing engineering team

- A meaningful role mentoring and developing junior engineers

- Direct involvement in engineering decisions and project outcomes

- Close collaboration with manufacturing, project and leadership teams

- The opportunity to shape and strengthen our engineering capability as the business grows
