Job Description

Howe Farming Howe Farming Enterprises Pty Ltd is seeking a full-time Production Engineer to support the design, operation, optimisation and maintenance of high-volume packing shed and production systems used for bananas, avocados, coffee and other tropical produce at our Queensland sites. This role is responsible for improving plant performance, equipment reliability, production flow, quality outcomes and safe operating standards across post-harvest and packing operations. The successful candidate will work closely with operations and maintenance teams to enhance efficiency, reduce downtime and support continuous improvement across multiple processing and packing activities.

Key responsibilities include:

- Planning, directing and coordinating production engineering activities for packing sheds and production lines.
- Analysing production schedules, equipment utilisation, downtime trends and operational data to improve throughput, efficiency and cost effectiveness.
- Reviewing packing line layouts, material flow and process bottlenecks, and recommending engineering improvements to plant and systems.
- Developing specifications for equipment, plant modifications, process upgrades, line expansions and new installations.
- Coordinating installation, commissioning, testing and modification of machinery and plant equipment.
- Establishing and maintaining standards and procedures for installation, inspection, maintenance, testing and quality control.
- Carrying out inspections of machinery, plant and associated systems to ensure optimum performance and reliability.
- Directing and coordinating planned, preventive and corrective maintenance programs to minimise production disruptions.
- Working with site teams to identify root causes of equipment failure, reduce waste and improve productivity.
- Supporting workplace health and safety compliance, risk controls and safe operating practices across production and maintenance activities.
- Preparing reports, technical documentation, maintenance plans and recommendations for capital works and process improvement initiatives.

To be successful in this role, you will have:





- A bachelor degree or higher qualification in production engineering, mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- At least 3 years of relevant experience in production, plant, manufacturing, food processing, packaging or industrial operations.
- Experience with automated or semi-automated production lines, conveyors, grading systems, packing equipment or industrial plant machinery.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess equipment performance and production data.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance systems, quality standards, engineering documentation and workplace safety requirements.
- Strong communication and coordination skills, with the ability to work effectively across operations, engineering and maintenance teams.

Desirable:

- Experience in horticulture, fresh produce packing, food manufacturing or agricultural processing environments.
- Experience in plant layout planning, process improvement, automation or controls.

Prepare technical reports, maintenance plans and recommendations for capital works and process improvement initiatives.

Qualification & experience Bachelor degree or higher in production engineering, mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering or a related engineering discipline (ANZSCO Skill Level 1 requirement). At least 3 years of relevant experience in production, plant engineering, manufacturing, food processing, packaging or industrial operations.

Demonstrated experience with automated or semi-automated production lines, conveyors, grading systems, packing equipment or industrial plant machinery. Experience in preventive maintenance planning, root cause analysis, equipment modification and continuous improvement. Knowledge of quality standards, engineering documentation and workplace health and safety requirements.

Valid driver licence required. Familiarity with agricultural processing or horticulture environments highly regarded.
