Review: Formal performance and salary review after six months
About National Drones
National Drones provides drone, geospatial, inspection, and data-processing services to customers across industries including infrastructure, utilities, forestry, mining, and asset management.
Our SmartData platform helps customers upload, manage, process, analyse, and view aerial imagery, inspections, LiDAR, point clouds, 3D models, and other geospatial data products.
About the role
We are looking for a practical full-stack developer to help maintain and extend SmartData.
You will work across a Python/Django backend and Vue frontend, delivering product improvements, fixing defects, writing tests, and helping verify changes through to release.
We use AI development tools such as Codex and Claude as part of our normal workflow. You will be expected to use these tools effectively while carefully reviewing, testing, and taking responsibility for the resulting work.
This is a good opportunity for a capable developer who wants meaningful product ownership and exposure to cloud processing, geospatial technology, interactive 3D viewers, and real-world drone operations.
What you'll do
- Develop and maintain features across Django, Python, JavaScript, and Vue.
- Build and update REST APIs, services, models, database queries, and frontend components.
- Investigate and fix issues affecting uploads, processing workflows, dashboards, inspections, and data viewers.
- Use Codex, Claude, and similar tools to accelerate investigation and implementation.
- Review agent-generated code for correctness, security, maintainability, and alignment with the existing architecture.
- Write focused backend and frontend automated tests.
- Perform browser-based and end-to-end workflow verification.
- Work with Amazon S3 uploads, asynchronous processing, callbacks, and background jobs.
- Prepare clean feature branches and pull requests for review.
- Document changes, assumptions, risks,
and remaining verification requirements.
- Collaborate with drone operators, data-processing specialists, and product stakeholders.
- Gradually take ownership of larger product areas as your familiarity with SmartData grows.
What we're looking for
- Commercial software-development experience or equivalent demonstrated capability.
- Good Python skills and experience with Django or a comparable web framework.
- Working knowledge of modern JavaScript and a component framework such as Vue or React.
- Experience developing or consuming REST APIs.
- Familiarity with relational databases, SQL, and schema migrations.
- Understanding of Git, feature branches, pull requests, and code review.
- Experience writing automated tests and debugging existing applications.
- Ability to read and safely modify a large, established codebase.
- Confidence using AI coding tools without blindly accepting their output.
- Good judgement about when to proceed, investigate further, or elevate a risky decision.
- Clear written communication, particularly when explaining what has been changed and verified.
You do not need to be an expert in every part of the stack. We value sound engineering judgement, curiosity, and the ability to learn unfamiliar systems.
Desirable experience
Experience in any of the following would be helpful, but is not required:
- Django REST Framework.
- Vue 3, Vuetify, Webpack, or frontend state management.
- AWS, particularly S3, Elastic Beanstalk, Batch, or CloudWatch.
- Docker and Linux-based development.
- Celery, Redis, queues, background processing, or callback APIs.
- CesiumJS,
Leaflet, Three.js, or web-based mapping.
- GIS, coordinate systems, photogrammetry, or remote sensing.
- LiDAR and point-cloud formats such as LAS/LAZ or 3D Tiles.
- Stripe subscriptions or other payment integrations.
- Sentry or similar production-monitoring tools.
- Drone, infrastructure-inspection, utilities, forestry, or mining applications.
How we work
- Work is broken into focused, reviewable changes.
- AI tools are used to improve development speed, investigation, and documentation.
- Human review and verification remain essential.
- Production safety is more important than code volume.
- Existing architecture and customer-facing contracts should be preserved unless a change has been deliberately approved.
- Locally tested, deployed, and production-verified are treated as separate stages.
- Developers are expected to raise risks and uncertainty rather than conceal them.
What success looks like
During your first six months, we would expect you to:
- Become comfortable running and navigating SmartData.
- Understand its principal Django, Vue, database, storage, and processing boundaries.
- Deliver focused features and fixes with suitable tests.
- Use AI tools productively while catching incomplete or unsafe suggestions.
- Trace problems across the frontend, backend, database, storage, and processing layers.
- Prepare reliable pull requests with explicit verification notes.
- Begin owning selected workflows with decreasing supervision.
What we offer
- Salary of $110,000-$115,000 plus superannuation.
- A formal performance and salary review after six months.
- Exposure to drone technology, geospatial data, cloud processing, and interactive 3D applications.
- Practical ownership of software used in real customer and operational workflows.
- Access to modern AI-assisted development tools.
- Opportunities to grow into broader technical and product ownership.
