Senior Urban Designer (Technical)

Local Government Contract | 35 Hours per Week | Approx. 11-Month Assignment

We are seeking an experienced Senior Urban Designer to lead the delivery of significant urban design, public domain, urban renewal and city-building projects. This is an excellent opportunity for a strategic and technically skilled design qualified to contribute to transformative projects that enhance the built environment and deliver lasting community outcomes.

About the Role

As the Senior Urban Designer, you will be responsible for leading and delivering key urban design and public domain projects from concept development through to implementation. You will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, manage external consultants, and provide specialist advice on urban design, sustainability, place-making and public realm improvements.

This role requires a highly motivated professional who can balance strategic thinking with hands-on project delivery while managing multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead the planning, design and delivery of major urban design and public domain projects.
- Prepare and manage project briefs, programs and consultant contracts.
- Provide urban design advice during project delivery and construction phases.
- Deliver high-quality project outcomes on time and within budget.
- Provide specialist urban design input into sustainability and green infrastructure initiatives.
- Work collaboratively with architects, landscape architects, engineers, project managers and other technical specialists.
- Manage external design consultants and ensure quality project outcomes.
- Represent project interests when engaging with government agencies, stakeholders and community groups.
- Identify funding opportunities and support project development initiatives.
- Promote best practice urban design outcomes and monitor emerging industry trends.
- Participate in stakeholder consultations, community engagement activities and project meetings as required.

About You





To be successful in this role, you will have:

- Minimum 8 years' post-graduate experience in Urban Design or a related discipline such as Architecture or Landscape Architecture.
- Demonstrated experience delivering public domain, urban renewal and city-building projects.
- Proven experience managing external design consultants and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Strong understanding of public realm design and infrastructure improvement projects.
- Excellent written, verbal and graphic communication skills.
- Strong stakeholder engagement, negotiation and consultation skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.
- A strategic mindset with the ability to identify opportunities and provide expert advice on urban design matters.
- Eligibility for membership or registration with a recognised professional body such as AIA, AILA, PIA or equivalent.

Technical Skills

You will possess robust proficiency in:

- Adobe Creative Suite
- AutoCAD
- SketchUp
- ArcGIS and/or equivalent GIS software
- Microsoft Office Suite

You will also have a strong understanding of:

- Urban design principles and place-making
- Public domain planning and design
- NSW planning frameworks
- Local Environmental Plans (LEPs)
- Development Control Plans (DCPs)
- Sustainable and resilient urban development practices

Highly Regarded

The following experience will be advantageous:

- Local Government or State Government experience
- Project Management qualifications
- Community engagement experience
- Heritage conservation knowledge
- Active transport planning and innovative street design experience
