Senior Maintenance Fitter – Automated Plant & Utilities
At Claytons, we design, manufacture, supply and install kitchens, stone benchtops, outdoor kitchens and wardrobes for the Australian building and renovation industry.
Operating from our Truganina manufacturing facility, we run a high-output production environment supported by automated woodworking machinery, production equipment and key site utilities.
We are seeking a strong, hands‑on Senior Maintenance Fitter to support the reliability, safety and performance of our manufacturing site.
Position Summary
The Senior Maintenance Fitter is responsible for supporting the safe and reliable operation of automated woodworking machinery, production equipment and key site utilities.
This role is suited to a mechanical fitter with strong fault‑finding experience in an industrial manufacturing environment. Experience with Homag or similar European woodworking machinery is highly regarded, but not essential.
The role will focus on breakdown response, preventative maintenance, mechanical fault‑finding, equipment reliability and support of production‑critical systems including CNCs, edgebanders, beam saws, drilling machines, conveyors, dust extraction, compressed air and boiler systems.
Key Responsibilities
Respond to mechanical breakdowns across production equipment.
Maintain and repair CNCs, edgebanders, beam saws, drilling machines, conveyors and automated handling systems.
Carry out mechanical adjustments, alignments, calibrations and changeovers.
Work on bearings, chains, belts, rollers, gearboxes, spindles, drill blocks, glue systems, trimming units, pneumatic cylinders and drive systems.
Support preventative maintenance, shutdown works and reliability improvements.
Inspect equipment for wear, damage, misalignment, air leaks, loose parts and guarding issues.
Maintain site utilities including dust extraction, compressed air, boiler systems and related infrastructure.
Escalate electrical, PLC, software or OEM faults to the correct specialist.
Support contractors and OEMs with clear fault details, photos, parts information and repair history.
Record work completed, downtime, labour, parts used and follow‑up actions in the computerised maintenance management system (CMMS).
Follow all WHS, Lockout/Tagout, guarding, working at heights and site safety requirements.
Key Performance Indicators
Breakdown Response: Respond to mechanical breakdowns quickly and support safe return to production.
Machine Reliability: Reduce repeat failures through effective repairs, fault‑finding and preventative maintenance.
Line Availability: Support automated line availability target of greater than 95%.
Preventative Maintenance:
Complete scheduled PM tasks on time and to the required standard.
Utility Reliability: Minimise stoppages caused by dust extraction, compressed air, boiler or other site utility issues.
Safety Compliance: Maintain full compliance with WHS, Lockout/Tagout, guarding, working at heights and site safety procedures.
CMMS Accuracy: Record work completed, downtime, labour, parts used and follow‑up actions accurately.
Qualifications and Experience
Required
Certificate III in Engineering ‑ Mechanical Trade, Fitting and Turning, or equivalent mechanical trade qualification.
Robust mechanical fault‑finding and repair experience in an industrial manufacturing environment.
Experience maintaining automated production machinery.
Ability to read mechanical drawings, machine manuals, parts diagrams and maintenance documentation.
Practical knowledge of pneumatics, bearings, belts, chains, rollers, gearboxes, motors and machine alignment.
Strong commitment to WHS, Lockout/Tagout, guarding and safe work practices.
Highly Regarded
Experience with Homag, Biesse, SCM, Weinig, Holzma, Weeke, Brandt or similar European woodworking machinery.
Experience with edgebanders, CNC routers, beam saws, drilling machines, conveyors or automated handling systems.
Experience maintaining dust extraction, compressed air, boiler systems and plant utilities.
Ability to identify spare parts, assess wear and support supplier or contractor communication.
Licences and Tickets
Highly regarded:
Forklift Licence – LF.
Elevating Work Platform ticket.
Working at Heights.
Dogging, rigging or other relevant high‑risk work licences.
Personal Attributes
Reliable, practical and hands‑on.
Able to work with minimal supervision.
Calm and methodical during breakdowns.
Strong safety focus.
Clear communicator with operators, supervisors, contractors and management.
Flexible with shift work, urgent breakdowns and occasional weekend maintenance.
Focused on preventing repeat failures, not just temporary fixes.
Working Conditions
This is a physical, hands‑on role in a busy industrial manufacturing environment.
Work may involve lifting, bending, climbing, working at heights, working around automated machinery and supporting both live production and planned shutdown activities.
PPE and site safety procedures must be followed at all times.
