Product Specialist – Open Pit Loading Fleet
New Porgera Limited (NPL) is a company incorporated in Papua New Guinea and owns the Porgera Gold Mine in Enga Province. NPL is a joint venture between Barrick Gold Corporation, Zijin Mining, and the Papua Current Guinea Government, combining global mining expertise with a shared commitment to responsible resource development and long-term value creation for Papua New Guinea.
The Porgera Gold Mine will employ nearly 3,000 Papua New Guineans at full production and, over its 30-year operating history, has contributed approximately 10% of Papua New Guinea's total annual exports, making it one of the country's most significant economic assets.
About the role
Become the technical authority for one of Papua New Guinea's premier hydraulic excavator fleets.
Some people repair excavators. Others understand how to make them perform. They know why hydraulic systems lose efficiency. They recognise the early signs of structural fatigue. They understand how maintenance strategy influences component life. Most importantly—they know how to eliminate repeat failures and maximise machine performance.
Those are the people we're looking for.
This is not a supervisory, planning or report‑writing engineering role. It's a hands‑on technical leadership position where your expertise will directly improve the performance and reliability of our Caterpillar 6030 and 6040 hydraulic excavators. As the Product Specialist – Open Pit Loading Fleet, you'll identify defects, determine their root cause, and implement permanent solutions. Working closely with maintenance teams, planners, reliability engineers, OEMs and operations, you'll use maintenance data and field experience to increase equipment availability, extend component life and reduce maintenance costs.
Success will be measured by improved equipment performance, fewer repeat failures, longer component life, lower maintenance costs and practical improvements adopted across the operation. As the technical authority for the loading fleet, you'll lead root cause investigations, optimise maintenance strategies, improve hydraulic and mechanical reliability, analyse equipment performance, support critical spares optimisation, mentor maintenance personnel, and drive continuous improvement across the operation.
You will model safety behaviours and coach and develop your team, working with your team to assess and manage risk. NPL operates in a complex environment that requires the successful applicant to be a self‑starter, with strong ability in delivery to support the mines successful operation whilst coordinating the efforts of your team members to complete projects according to plan in a timely and safe manner.
About you
You're the person others turn to when an excavator develops a problem no one else can solve. Your credibility comes from years of practical, hands‑on experience rather than your job title. You'll hold a Heavy Mobile Equipment trade qualification (or equivalent) and have extensive experience maintaining Caterpillar 6030 and/or 6040 hydraulic excavators. You bring strong knowledge of hydraulic, structural, mechanical and electrical systems,
along with proven experience investigating repeat equipment failures using Root Cause Analysis and defect elimination techniques. Experience with SAP or a similar maintenance management system, excellent communication and coaching skills, and a genuine passion for improving equipment performance are essential for success in this role.
You will demonstrate a ‘One Team’ approach, providing effective leadership and development for your local team to reinforce NPL’s culture and values, always promoting a safe work environment. The position requires a high energy individual, hands‑on management style and desire to continuously improve you and your team’s knowledge and systems and methods of work.
Why New Porgera
In return, you will be joining a world‑class mining operation with the opportunity to impact the development and upskilling of our predominantly local workforce, combined with a team keen to learn and absorb knowledge. This offers a unique opportunity to further shape the department and improve NPL’s social performance and people knowledge.
You will be joining an operation that prioritises safety, leading a team toward best‑in‑class safety practices while contributing to the development of a highly capable national workforce—making a lasting impact on the industry.
This role is offered on a FIFO basis either from Papua New Guinea, Australia/New Zealand with a 21/14 roster on a contract basis with a highly competitive remuneration package. This is an prospect to influence the long‑term reliability strategy of one of the mining industry's premier loading fleets while helping develop the next generation of Papua New Guinea maintenance professionals.
