Dental Assistant / Receptionist — Casual Relief Shifts

About the role

This is a casual, on-call relief role — extra days of work that fit around your current job, study, or family life.

Depending on your experience and the day's needs, a shift may be Dental Assistant or Dental Receptionist. Most of the gaps we need covered are chairside, so dental assisting capability is highly preferred — but if your strengths are on the reception side, we'd still like to hear from you.

Because relief shifts involve stepping into a working practice with only a brief orientation, prior experience in a dental practice is required for this role . This may suit you if you're:

A DA or dental receptionist employed casually at another practice or through an agency

Studying, or returning to the workforce, and would like the occasional day

Experienced in dental but stepped back from regular work — happy to help out now and then

Hours and availability

There is no roster and no minimum hours. When a gap comes up in the regular team — most often short-notice illness — you'll get a call or text asking if you're available, sometimes the evening before or the morning of the shift. If you're free, the day is yours; if not, you say no, and you'll still be asked next time. Nothing about your existing work needs to change.

Shifts come up at both our Yass and Murrumbateman practices, and you can tell us which suits you, including shift by shift. Every shift is paid at casual rates with loading, including orientation time on your first day.

What you'll do

You will play a key role in creating a positive and welcoming experience for our patients while ensuring the smooth day-to-day operations. Familiarity with Dental4Windows is a bonus, not a requirement — you'll be oriented on your first shift.

As a Dental Assistant, you'll:

Assist the dental clinician during treatment

Take x-rays and clinical photos (if licensed)

Sterilise instruments and prepare treatment rooms

Support the clinical team day to day

As a Dental Receptionist, you'll:

Greet patients and make them feel welcome

Answer calls and manage the appointment schedule

Process payments and handle HICAPS

Maintain patient records and follow-ups

Keep the front of house running smoothly

Confidence stepping into an unfamiliar surgery or front desk after a brief orientation

Confidence using technology, working with a range of computer software and specialised dental equipment

Excellent attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions quickly and carefully

Qualified and caring verbal and written communication skills, with confidence speaking to patients over the phone and face to face

The ability to remain focused and highly organised in a busy workplace, showcasing time management and multitasking skills
