The opportunity
A prominent NSW Government central agency based in the Sydney CBD is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel for a 3-month contract engagement, with the potential for extension.
Reporting directly to the General Counsel or Deputy General Counsel, you will be embedded within the Office of General Counsel as a senior member of the legal team - providing strategic advice on complex and sensitive matters, drafting and negotiating high-value legal documents and supporting whole-of-government initiatives with minimal supervision.
What you'll be doing
- Providing high-quality, strategic and timely legal advice on complex and sensitive matters including commercial, procurement, banking and financial arrangements, public finance and legislative or policy initiatives
- Drafting, reviewing and negotiating complex legal documents including contracts, funding agreements, governance instruments and briefs
- Supporting the OGC on discrete projects, transactions, document reviews and peak workload periods including whole-of-government initiatives
- Engaging effectively with senior stakeholders across the agency and other NSW Government departments
- Identifying legal and commercial risks and proposing practical, fit-for-purpose mitigation strategies
- Operating with a high degree of autonomy within the agency's legal, policy and governance frameworks
- Admitted as a legal practitioner with a current unrestricted NSW practising certificate
- Minimum 15 years' post-qualification experience with demonstrated experience advising the public sector
- Proven capability to operate at a senior advisory level - providing strategic advice to General Counsel, Deputy GC and executive stakeholders
- Strong experience in commercial and procurement law, banking and finance, public sector governance and/or public finance
- Current qualified indemnity insurance (own cover required)
- Ability to integrate quickly and deliver high-quality outputs with minimal supervision
- Strong written and verbal communication skills - clear, practical and commercially minded
- Willingness to undergo a criminal record check
- Prior experience supporting a central agency or whole-of-government legal function
- Expertise in one or more of: commercial and procurement law, banking and finance, public sector governance, public finance or legislative drafting
