Most workplace safety training is something people click through and forget.
Arya builds the kind they remember - online safety awareness courses for frontline staff working in iconic high-stakes environments - where what someone recalls under pressure can change the outcome of a potentially dangerous event.
We do it through storytelling simulations. Grounded, empathetic narrative - not bullet points and compliance quizzes - because that's how people actually learn, and remember.
We're looking for an instructional designer who thinks the same way: someone who can take a confronting, high-stakes subject and turn it into a learning experience people carry with them, confidently.
- 2-3 days a week
- Day rate, commensurate with experience - 12-month contract with genuine scope to grow and build a team
- Hybrid workplace (Bondi Junction / home office)
Why this role exists
Our recent "Escape. Hide. Tell." program is the kind of work you'll be doing. We're a small, quick-growing Australian startup already working with commercial clients and community non-profits across Australia, the US, Canada and Europe - and this role is the person who designs and delivers that work, starting mid-late August 2026.
What you'll own
This is a hands-on, end-to-end role. You'll take each course from discovery through to launch:
- Discovery and strategy - run workshops with internal teams or clients to understand their environment and define the learning goals that matter.
- Design and build - turn abstract safety concepts into relatable, memorable narrative experiences, built in Articulate Rise 360 and Storyline.
- Publish and deploy - package courses (SCORM)
and see them live in learning platforms.
- Project delivery - own the budget, timeline, and stakeholder relationships from kickoff to sign-off.
- Creative lead - brief and manage a bench of freelance designers and creatives, holding every deliverable to our quality standards.
- Judgment on sensitive content - handle high-stakes, sometimes confronting subject matter with nuance.
You'll work directly with the founder and leadership team, and you'll shape how Arya tells stories at scale - not execute someone else's brief.
What you’ll need
- 3+ years in learning design, instructional design or a closely related field.
- Hands-on build experience with Articulate Rise 360 / Storyline or equivalent.
- SCORM packaging and LMS deployment experience.
- Professional workshop facilitation and client-facing skills.
- A storyteller's instinct - you think in narrative, not just content structure.
- Proven ability to run a project end-to-end: budget, timeline, freelancers, stakeholders.
- AI-native ways of working - AI tools are woven into how you research, script, prototype and produce.
- Experience managing freelancers or small teams.
- A commercial mindset and comfort in a fast-moving startup.
Why you'll love it
- Real ownership. You shape the process and the product, not slot into one that's already decided.
- Work that matters. Your courses are used by real people, in real high-stakes places, around the world.
- Room to grow. As Arya scales, this role has genuine potential to become bigger and longer-term.
- Flexibility. 2-3 days a week, structured around your life, with additional paid days as projects require.
