Company DescriptionXefco is an Australian textile technology company developing advanced materials and manufacturing systems designed to significantly reduce the environmental impact of textile production. The company was incorporated in 2018, and its technologies are used by leading global outdoor apparel and fashion brands.
Xefco commercialised its first technology, XReflex, powered by Xefco®, in 2019 — an ultra-thin aluminium coating applied to textile yarns by vapour deposition. It reflects body heat back to the wearer and reduces the insulation fill required in a garment by up to 50%.
Xefco's flagship platform, Ausora, powered by Xefco®, is a waterless atmospheric plasma dyeing and finishing technology. It removes wastewater from the dyeing and finishing steps and reduces dyehouse water consumption by up to 95%. Ausora has been developed through a long-standing research partnership with Deakin University, alongside a broader set of potential coating applications.
This role sits with the Plasma Systems R&D; group at the Xefco Pilot Facility in Waurn Ponds, Geelong, where prototype plasma systems are scaled toward production machines.
About the RoleXefco's Plasma Systems R&D; group is looking for a power supply electronics engineer to design, build and test the high voltage power supplies that drive Ausora plasma coating systems. The role is based onsite at the Xefco Pilot Facility, working alongside a multidisciplinary team of engineers, plasma physicists and materials scientists.
Reporting to the R&D; Engineering Manager, you will be central to the design, development and implementation of high voltage AC and DC power supplies operating up to 20 kV. The scope covers both improvement of existing small-scale and prototype devices and the transfer of those designs onto large-scale pilot machines.
The role calls for depth in power electronics, high voltage circuit design, simulation, and safety and regulatory compliance. It is hands-on: you will build and test what you design.
ResponsibilitiesDesign and development Design, develop and optimise high voltage power electronic circuits and systems. Produce designs that meet defined performance, reliability and efficiency requirements. Use design and simulation tools (AutoCAD Electrical, SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink, Altium Designer or equivalent) to validate and refine designs before prototyping. Fabricate functional, robust prototype devices and subsystems for application testing.



Select components and maintain the bill of materials, accounting for availability, lead time and supplier qualification.
Testing and validation Develop and implement test plans that evaluate system performance across the expected operating envelope. Work with plasma physicists and materials scientists to test power supply performance against process requirements. Analyse test data, troubleshoot faults, and feed findings back into design iterations. Keep test records and design traceability sufficient to evidence design decisions and support compliance.
Collaboration and documentation Work with engineers, technicians and scientists to integrate high voltage systems into larger machines. Produce technical documentation: design specifications, component selection rationale, schematics, test protocols and safety reports. Communicate progress, findings and risks to stakeholders and management. Contribute to project planning and schedule development. Support the R&D; Engineering Manager and the Engineering Development Manager in developing and implementing commercial manufacturing plans.
Safety and compliance Design to the electrical safety, EMC and machinery safety standards applicable to the equipment and its intended market (IEC, ISO and AS/NZS as relevant). Specify the protective measures required for safe operation and maintenance — interlocks, enclosures, earthing, discharge paths and isolation provisions. Contribute to risk assessment and risk control for high voltage equipment and test activities. Keep current with standards changes, emerging technology and regulatory developments affecting high voltage systems.
Health and Safety ResponsibilitiesThis role works with equipment operating at up to 20 kV. Everyone at Xefco has duties under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Vic). In this position you are expected to: Take reasonable care for your own health and safety, and for that of anyone else affected by your work. Follow Xefco's electrical safety, isolation and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures without exception, including before any access to energised equipment or stored energy.



Treat every high voltage assembly as live until it has been isolated, de-energised, discharged and proven de-energised by an authorised process. Hold and maintain the licences and authorisations required for the electrical work you perform, and work within their limits. Report all incidents, near misses and hazards through Xefco's incident reporting process, promptly. Cooperate with risk assessments, safe work procedures and incident investigations affecting your work. Never bypass, disable or defeat a safety interlock, guard or isolation device.
QualificationsQualifications and experience Bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering, power electronics or a related discipline. At least five years' post-graduate experience designing, fabricating and testing power electronic systems. Demonstrated experience developing high voltage AC and DC power supplies.
Technical skills Robust understanding of high voltage and high frequency circuit design, semiconductor devices, transformers and rectifiers, and power converter topologies. Proficiency with simulation and design tools (AutoCAD Electrical, SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink, Altium Designer or equivalent). Working knowledge of the safety protocols and regulatory standards that apply to high voltage systems.
Other requirements Australian right to work. Willingness to undertake occasional domestic and international travel.
Desired qualificationsPhD in power electronics. Experience with plasma technologies or plasma generation systems. Knowledge of direct switching and high frequency circuit design theory. Hands-on prototyping experience with SMT components. Experience carrying a design from prototype through to production.
