Description

G'day! You've found an opportunity that could define your next chapter.

Applicants must be Australian citizens and hold or be eligible to obtain an Australian Government Security Clearance with the ability to successfully complete an Organisational Suitability Assessment. More information regarding security clearances can be found at .

Based in Melbourne — we offer relocation support for candidates moving from other states.

Mission

You're joining at the defining moment of one of the most significant technology programmes Australia has ever undertaken. This programme will build and operate the dedicated cloud giving Australia's national security community and its allies the capability to see more, share more, innovate and act faster than ever before.

The architectural decisions being made now—how we structure networking, implement security controls, and automate at scale—will shape how Australia's national security community operates for the next decade. You won’t be inheriting someone else’s design choices. You’ll be making them.

Your Opportunity

As a Network Development Engineer, you’ll be at the heart of the infrastructure that powers the world's largest cloud computing platform— not configuring services on top of it, but engineering the very fabric that makes it all possible. You will design, build, and operate next‑generation network infrastructure at scale, collaborate with talented engineers, and make decisions that impact millions of customers worldwide.

Perks

- Learning & development – AWS training and certification support and internal learning platforms.
- Health, income protection and life cover – Amazon subsidises private health insurance premiums; group salary continuance and life insurance are included at no cost.
- Military differential pay – Australian employees taking defence reserve leave may receive up to 52 weeks of differential pay.
- Employee Assistance Program – free, confidential support 24/7 for mental health, financial coaching, legal questions, and everyday life events.
- Family‑building benefit – access to Maven for fertility treatment, adoption support, surrogacy, and parenting coaching.
- Amazon Extras & employee discount – cashback and discounts across many retail, fitness, travel and lifestyle partners.

Key Responsibilities

You’ll own the engineering, implementation, and evolution of networks that operate at a scale most engineers only read about. Your work will span the full lifecycle—from deploying next‑generation network infrastructure to ensuring it runs with the reliability and performance that millions of customers depend on.

You’ll lead network projects that shape growth: scaling initiatives, technology refreshes, deployment implementations, and optimisation efforts that push boundaries. When customer‑impacting events occur, you’ll troubleshoot, resolve, and build automation that prevents recurrence.

Your analytical mindset will drive you to interrogate the network using advanced tools and metrics, ensuring every component operates correctly, safely and securely. You’ll investigate complex technical issues scientifically, trace root causes, and implement permanent fixes.

Beyond maintenance, you’ll invent the next generation of networking solutions. You’ll develop automation to eliminate manual operations, design sustainable processes, identify bottlenecks before they become problems, and evaluate emerging technologies for integration.

A Day in the Life

Morning: pulse‑check on the network, review metrics dashboards, assess alerts, and confirm performance.

Midday: collaborate on a scaling project, debate approaches, design sustainable architecture.

Afternoon: design automation to eliminate recurring operational tasks, refine and test code.

Late afternoon: respond to a customer‑impacting event, troubleshoot, apply knowledge, orchestrate restoration, capture root cause, and design preventive measures.

End of day: reflected on contributions that enable Australia’s national security community to operate with confidence and prepare for new challenges.

About the Team

The Network Development team drives engineering, implementation, scalability, operations, reliability,

and sustainability for all network fabrics that underpin software services and platforms within an AWS region.

Basic Qualifications

- Knowledge of one or more scripting languages (e.g., Python, Ruby, Perl).
- 4+ years’ experience in a network‑focused technical role with routing protocols and platforms in large‑scale data centre or WAN environments.
- Solid understanding of network troubleshooting and performance including TCP performance (latency, jitter, buffers), throughput/packet rate testing, and L2/L3 path selection.
- Ability to compare features within routing protocols (e.g., BGP policy, OSPF LSDB) from a distributed systems perspective, and experience applying those protocols to large‑scale networks.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience creating process improvements with automation and analysis, or delivering results on large, cross‑functional initiatives.
- Comfortable discussing network design principles and selecting reasonable platforms for large‑scale environments.
- Understanding of packet flow through network platforms, differences between chassis and pizza‑box architectures, and buffer considerations.
- Experience developing engineering, deployment, or operations mechanisms to support IP networking systems at scale.
- If you do not meet all of these criteria but still think you would be a great fit, we welcome you to get in touch.

Acknowledgement of Country

In the spirit of reconciliation Amazon acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
