About the Business:
Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company, is a leading provider of rolling stock, infrastructure and advanced technologies for Australian rail network operators. The company delivers EMD® locomotives and engines, trackwork, signaling and comprehensive locomotive upgrade and maintenance services at more than 20 sites across Australia. We are building a Battery Electric Locomotive at our Redbank site in Queensland.
About the role:
The Electrical Design Engineer will design and deliver electrical solutions for freight locomotives, supporting technology upgrades and fleet improvement projects. The work will include control systems, instrumentation, power electronics and communications equipment to ensure that Australia’s rolling stock are efficient, safe, reliable and effective. This role will also provide professional technical support through design, modelling and engineering documentation for a range of developmental and operational projects.
Job tasks and responsibilities:
Deliver innovative, practical, high-quality engineering solutions for rolling stock fleets in line with customer expectations and operational needs.
Ensure compliance with engineering standards, procedures and regulations.
Prepare and present technical reports, test instructions, engineering recommendations and advice to internal and external stakeholders.
Identify, develop and support product improvements that enhance efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
Ensure designs and processes enhance workplace safety by identifying and removing hazards and promoting safe work practices.
Comply with National Rail Safety Act requirements, Electrical Safety legislation and all company HSE and Rail Safety Management Systems.
About You:
A Bachelor’s degree in electrical/electronics engineering with relevant rolling stock experience.
5+ years' experience in rolling stock design, manufacturing, testing, commissioning or maintenance preferred.
RPEQ (Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland) registration, or eligibility to obtain registration, in the electrical engineering discipline.
Strong understanding of rolling stock electrical and electronic systems and interfaces.
Experience with applying Australian and international standards relating to rolling stock electrical and electronic systems.
Postgraduate qualifications and/or CPEng status will be highly regarded.
Experience with engineering design processes and documentation, including reports, specifications, testing, prototyping and change management.
Interest or experience in emerging technologies such as advanced manufacturing and AI (desirable).
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Experience with eCAD and 3D CAD design software (desirable).
Self-organised with a high level of initiative and valuable time management skills.
Professional writing, speaking and stakeholder engagement skills.
