The Tasmanian University Student Association (TUSA), founded in 1899, is one of Australia’s oldest student associations and represents over 29,000 students. TUSA provides independent representation, advocacy and welfare support for students across Tasmania and at the University’s Rozelle and Darlinghurst campuses in Sydney, NSW. The association supports more than 80 affiliated sporting clubs, societies, autonomous student collectives, and publications such as Togatus, while coordinating a wide range of student‑focused events. TUSA also plays an active role in university governance, ensuring that student voices are heard in key decision‑making processes. The association is committed to fostering an inclusive, vibrant, and engaged student community.
Role Description
The Business Development & Operations Manager is a part time (0.6 FTE), on‑site role based in Hobart, TAS. This new position will play a critical leadership role in advancing TUSA's operational performance, commercial sustainability, and future growth. The position provides senior leadership and oversight of TUSA's hospitality and commercial operations, including Grounded Social Enterprise Café, the Student Services Hub, and other customer‑facing operations, while supporting the development of staff and operational leaders across these services.
The role is also responsible for identifying, developing and implementing business and social enterprise opportunities that support TUSA's strategic objectives and create sustainable revenue streams aligned with TUSA's values and purpose.
A key focus of the position is leading the operational and commercial planning associated with TUSA's future expansion projects, including the development of new facilities, procurement processes, contract management, supplier relationships and operational readiness.
The role works closely with TUSA staff, student leaders, University stakeholders, contractors, suppliers and commercial partners to ensure operational excellence, support organisational growth, and deliver positive outcomes for students.
Qualifications
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Business, Management, Hospitality, Project Management or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of qualifications and experience.
- Demonstrated experience leading operational teams and developing high‑performing staff.
- Experience managing business operations, hospitality services, customer service operations, retail services, commercial ventures or similar business activities.
- Demonstrated experience in business development, commercial planning and revenue growth initiatives.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing operational systems, service standards and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Experience managing procurement processes, supplier relationships and commercial contracts.
- Demonstrated experience leading complex projects, capital works, facilities development or organisational growth initiatives.
- Strong financial, commercial and operational management skills.
- Exceptional stakeholder engagement and relationship management capabilities.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to balance strategic thinking with operational delivery.
