The successful applicant will be appointed on a contract for a period up to 5 years and can be reappointed for a further one term.

Expression of Interest

Expressions of Interest are now being sought for the role of Child Advocate.

This is a significant statutory role for a person who can listen to children and young people, stand up for their rights, and work with them to make sure their voices are heard when decisions are being made about their lives.

The Child Advocate will have a particular focus on children and young people in out-of-home care and the youth justice system, including those in detention facilities. The role will involve individual advocacy, supporting children and young people to raise concerns or complaints, and helping strengthen the systems that affect their safety, wellbeing and rights.

The recent Commissioner for Children and Young People will strengthen Tasmania's independent oversight and advocacy system. Its work will include promoting the safety, wellbeing, rights and participation of children and young people, conducting inquiries into systemic issues, and monitoring and reviewing the care and treatment of children and young people in out-of-home care and youth justice.

Child Advocate Responsibilities

- advocating for individual children and young people, including those in out-of-home care or detention;




- listening to children and young people and giving voice to their concerns;
- helping children and young people access support services and make complaints where needed;
- making complaints on behalf of children and young people, with appropriate consent;
- inquiring into youth justice or out-of-home care services where concerns are raised;
- establishing and administering an independent visitor scheme; and
- establishing an advisory group for children in out-of-home care.

We are seeking a person with strong integrity, sound judgement and a demonstrated commitment to the rights, safety and wellbeing of children and young people. The successful applicant will need to be able to build trust with children and young people, work respectfully with families, carers, communities and services, and act independently and courageously in the best interests of children and young people.
