Keep the parts moving, the system accurate and the workshop supplied
Good stores people do more than receive deliveries and move boxes.
They know what is on the shelf, what is missing, what is late and what needs to happen next to keep production moving.
Thompson Longhorn is looking for a capable, hands‑on Stores & Purchasing Coordinator to support our manufacturing operations at Goomburra.
This is not a purely desk‑based purchasing position, and it is not a basic pick‑and‑pack warehouse job. It is a practical combination of stores, inventory control, purchasing, freight, receiving and customer despatch.
You will spend time both on the floor and in the system—checking stock, following up purchase orders, receiving materials, working with suppliers, preparing customer orders and fixing discrepancies before they become production problems.
What you will actually be doing
- Maintaining accurate stock quantities, locations, reorder levels and inventory records
- Picking and issuing materials and parts for manufacturing jobs
- Assisting with the timely purchasing of materials, components and workshop supplies
- Monitoring outstanding purchase orders and following up suppliers
- Comparing supplier pricing, service and overall value
- Receiving deliveries and reconciling goods against purchase orders and delivery dockets
- Investigating shortages, incorrect deliveries and inventory discrepancies
- Coordinating inbound and outbound freight
- Packaging, strapping and quality‑checking goods before despatch
- Preparing load lists, freight paperwork, order records and supporting photographs
- Maintaining accurate item weights,
dimensions and other system information
- Working with Production and other departments to resolve stock and order issues
- Identifying better suppliers, products, materials and ways of working
- Keeping the stores and delivery areas clean, organised and safe
What we are looking for
Your current job title is less important than whether you can do the work.
You may currently be working as a storeperson, inventory controller, warehouse coordinator, purchasing officer, logistics coordinator or in a similar manufacturing support role.
You will need:
- A current forklift licence
- Practical experience in stores, inventory, purchasing, warehousing or despatch
- Confidence using inventory, ERP or production‑management software
- Sound Microsoft Word and Excel skills
- Robust attention to detail and accurate recordkeeping
- The ability to follow orders and discrepancies through to completion
- Confidence dealing with suppliers, freight providers and internal departments
- The ability to manage competing priorities without losing track of the details
- A practical approach to problem‑solving
- A willingness and physical ability to undertake regular manual handling
- A strong commitment to workplace safety
Experience in manufacturing,
engineering, fabrication, agricultural equipment or a similar practical environment would be highly regarded.
The type of person who will succeed here
You do not wait for someone else to notice that stock is running low, a purchase order is overdue or a delivery does not match the paperwork.
You check it, chase it, correct it and close it out.
You will enjoy this role if you:
- Take pride in an accurate and well‑organised stores area
- Like seeing clear, practical results from your work
- Can move comfortably between computer work and hands‑on tasks
- Communicate directly and professionally
- Stay calm when priorities change
- Look for better ways to manage stock, suppliers and processes
- Understand that small inventory errors can create major production delays
This role will not suit someone who needs every task allocated before taking action or who is comfortable leaving loose ends for someone else to resolve.
Why join Thompson Longhorn?
Thompson Longhorn designs and manufactures livestock‑handling equipment and infrastructure from our Goomburra facility.
This position gives you the opportunity to work across several important areas of the business rather than being restricted to one narrow function. You will have a direct influence on stock accuracy, supplier performance, production efficiency and the quality of orders leaving our facility.
Good work in this role is visible: the right materials are available, production keeps moving and customers receive what they were promised.
