- Build your career across agricultural policy, advocacy and industry projects
- Join a small but mighty organisation representing Queensland cane growers
- Varied, purposeful work shaped by the season - from policy to projects
The organisation
CANEGROWERS is the voice of Australia's sugarcane growers. For more than 100 years, the organisation has represented growers in negotiations with governments, mills, export markets and industry partners - protecting farm viability, profitability and the reputation of Australian sugar.
Around 70% of Australian sugarcane growers are members. From its Brisbane State office and network of 13 district companies, CANEGROWERS combines credible policy advocacy with practical support for farming businesses across Queensland.
The opportunity
This is an excellent next step for an early-career professional who wants to build a career at the intersection of agriculture, public policy and industry engagement. You will join a close-knit policy team, undertake research and analysis, prepare clear briefing material and help CANEGROWERS respond to issues that matter to members.
Because the crushing season is underway, the first five months will be weighted towards Policy Officer support. You will build knowledge of the industry while contributing to policy papers, submissions, Board material, data analysis and stakeholder responses. As the season changes, your remit will broaden to include more hands-on support for the Farm Business Resilience Project, including workshops, facilitator coordination and engagement with growers and district offices.
What you will do
- Research and analyse emerging issues affecting cane growers and the wider agricultural sector.
- Collect, manage and interpret data to support policy advice, advocacy positions and decision-making.
- Draft briefing notes, policy papers, Board papers, submissions and responses to information requests.
- Support engagement with government, industry organisations,
CANEGROWERS district offices and other stakeholders.
- Assist with the planning and delivery of Farm Business Resilience workshops, training and supporting communications.
- Help coordinate facilitators, delivery arrangements and project reporting across a distributed network.
- Translate policy priorities into practical, accessible outcomes for growers.
What you will bring
- Approximately 2-3 years' relevant experience in policy, research, advocacy, agriculture, agribusiness, government, consulting or program support.
- A relevant tertiary qualification in agriculture, agribusiness, science, economics, public policy or a related discipline.
- Strong research and analytical skills, including confidence working with data and synthesising complex information.
- Clear, concise writing skills and experience preparing professional reports, briefings, submissions or similar material.
- An understanding of government processes and how policy decisions are developed and influenced.
- A practical, organised and collaborative approach, with the confidence to engage professionally with farmers, industry representatives and senior stakeholders.
- An interest in agriculture and regional industries. Direct sugar-industry experience is welcome but not essential.
- Capacity to travel regularly throughout Queensland during the February-May off-season.
Why CANEGROWERS?
- Build breadth quickly in a small, respected organisation with a century-long record of advocacy.
- Work on issues with a direct impact on farm businesses, regional communities and a major export industry.
- Gain exposure to senior industry leaders, government stakeholders and CANEGROWERS' statewide district network.
- Develop across both policy and practical program delivery rather than being confined to a narrow graduate role.
- Join a flexible and collaborative working setting.
Remuneration will be negotiated with the successful candidate and will reflect skills and experience.
