Northern Health are seeking applications from motivated and enthusiastic individuals who are currently undertaking postgraduate training in cardiac sonography to join the Cardiac Investigations Team at Northern Health as a Trainee Cardiac Sonographer.

Northern Health is the major provider of acute, maternity, sub-acute, mental health, specialist, community and home-based services in Melbourne's rapidly growing outer north.

Services are provided through our six main campuses: Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn and Mernda Community Hospital and Kilmore District Hospital. In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park, Mernda and Coburg.

About the Role

This position provides high quality, patient-centred cardiac ultrasound services under the supervision of accredited Cardiac Sonographers and Cardiologists while undertaking or consolidating postgraduate training recognised by the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR).

The Trainee Cardiac Sonographer is responsible for delivering safe, effective and timely cardiac diagnostic services while progressively developing the knowledge,



skills and clinical competencies required for independent practices. The role contributes to a culture of teamwork, continuous quality improvement and excellent patient outcomes.

This role is responsible for

- Performing and assisting with transthoracic echocardiography and other cardiac ultrasound examinations in accordance with departmental protocols and scope of practice.
- Acquiring high-quality cardiac ultrasound images and accurate measurements for clinical interpretation.
- Working under the supervision of accredited Cardiac Sonographers and Cardiologists, with increasing autonomy as clinical competency develops.
- Recognising and escalating abnormal or urgent findings to the appropriate clinical team.
- Providing safe, compassionate and patient-centred care while ensuring patient comfort and dignity.
- Maintaining accurate, clear and timely patient documentation.
- Participating in inpatient and outpatient cardiac imaging services as required.
- Engaging in structured education, competency assessment and continuing professional development.
- Participating in quality improvement, research, audit and accreditation activities.
- Supporting Northern Health's commitment to patient-centred care, cultural safety, child safety and clinical governance.

To be successful in this role you will have

- Enrolment in, or completion of at least 50% of, an ASAR recognised postgraduate qualification in Cardiac Sonography.
- A minimum of 12 months' clinical experience in sonography or a relevant medical imaging discipline.




- Registration with the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry.
- Demonstrated knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology and echocardiography principles.
- A commitment to ongoing professional development and evidence-based practice.
- Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team while developing increasing clinical independence.
